What you can do in communities

You can do different things depending on whether your community is public or private.

General info on public communities

  • Public communities can’t be made private later.
  • Anyone can join or ask to join. But if someone obtains an active invite link, they can join the community without asking to join.
  • Public communities can be seen by anyone online and can be found in searches. Anyone can see the community's members and posts.

General info on private communities

  • Private communities can’t be made public later.
  • Anyone with access to an active invite link can join the community.
  • Only members can see the posts.
  • Only members and invitees can see who belongs to a private community.
  • If you use Google+ through work or school, the privacy settings might be different.

Private communities and searches

You can decide whether people can find your private community in Google+ searches.

If a private community shows in searches:

  • People can ask to join the community.
  • People can see the community name and photo.

If a private community does not show in searches:

  • Anyone with access to an active invite link can join the community.
  • People might find a link to the community on other web pages.
  • Someone with a link to the community might see the community name and photo.
  • Someone with a link to the community might be able to ask to join the community.
  • If a private community doesn’t allow people to ask to join, then new members have to be invited.
