Customize invitation settings for Hangouts on the computer

You can allow certain Google+ circles or non-Google+ contacts to start a Hangout with you without sending you a Hangout invitation. Or you can require people to send you an invitation first.

For example, you could allow your "Family" circle, that includes people like your cousins, to start a Hangout with you right away. But you could require people in your "Work" circle to send you an invite first before you start a Hangout.

Get notified about Hangouts requests

You can turn notifications on and off for new Hangout invitations.

  1. Open Hangouts in Gmail.
  2. Click menu at the top of the Hangouts list.
  3. Click Customize invite settings.
  4. Check the box next to “Get notified about Hangout requests.”

Change your invitation settings

  1. Open Hangouts in Gmail or Google+.
    • Gmail: In the bottom left, click the Hangouts icon .
    • Google+: In the top right, click the Hangouts icon .
  2. Click menu at the top of the Hangouts list.
  3. Click Customize invite settings.
  4. Choose the recommended invitation settings or customize your settings. 
    • Recommended:
      • People in your Google+ circles can contact you without sending you a Hangout invitation.
      • Everyone else must send you an invitation.
    • Customized: You decide who can contact you without sending you a Hangout invitation first.
      • Can contact you directly: These people can start a Hangout with you for the first time without sending you an invitation.
      • Can send you an invitation: People in the circle are required to send you an invitation before starting a Hangout with you for the first time. To receive notifications for Hangouts invitations, check the box next to "Get notified about Hangout requests."
      • Can't contact you: All invitations from the circle will be ignored. The person who sent you the invitation won't be notified that you ignored it.
  5. To close the window, click X.

To adjust the invite settings for people who aren't in your Google+ circles, scroll to the bottom of the list and change the setting for "Everyone else."

By default, people in the circles that you've created are allowed to start Hangouts with you without sending you an invite first.
