Manage your Google+ community

When you own or moderate a Google+ community, you can create categories to organise discussions, remove offensive content, highlight great posts, add moderators to help you to keep the conversation going, invite members or edit your community.

Tip: Editing your community works best on a computer. You may not be able to edit some of your community from a mobile device.

Ways to manage your community

Invite people to your community

You can invite circles, individual Google+ users or email addresses to join your community – up to 500 people at a time. Having more people usually increases the number of posts in your community and encourages others to use it.

Important (for moderators/owners): If you invite an email address, the person with that email address will get an email inviting them to join the community (unless they've opted out of getting such emails). The email will include a link to join the community that can be used once by anyone, not just the person you've invited. For example, if the person you've invited forwards their community invitation email to another person before clicking the link in the email, the person who they forwarded the message to could use the email link to join the community. Also, if you invite an email address to the community, other moderators and owners will be able to see it.

Tip: Anyone can share a community by clicking the "Share this community" button. When you click it, you’ll create a Google+ post that links to the community’s page. However, it won’t create an actual invitation for people to accept or decline.

Invite people to join your community

Computer

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the upper left-hand corner, click the drop-down menu > click Communities.
  3. Click your community.
  4. In the top right-hand corner, click Invite people in the “Spread the word” box.
  5. In the “Add a comment” box, you can explain a bit more about your community or why you’d like people to join.
  6. In the "To" box, add the people you’d like to invite. You can invite your circles, individual Google+ users or email addresses.
  7. In the bottom left-hand corner, click Send.

Android app

  1. Open the Google+ app .
  2. Near the top right-hand corner, touch the down arrow > My Communities > name of the community that you want to invite people to.
  3. Near the top right-hand corner, touch the Person icon .
  4. Touch Choose people to share with. You can touch the circles or people you want to invite or, in the top left-hand corner, you can touch the magnifying glass to search for a person or circle . You can also add an email address from your contacts. 
  5. When you've finished adding the people you’d like to invite, in the top right-hand corner, touch the tick.
  6. In the bottom right-hand corner of the post, touch the Send icon .

Mobile browser

You can’t invite someone to a community on a mobile browser. Please use a computer or the Google+ app instead.

iPhone/iPad app

  1. Open the Google+ app .
  2. In the upper left-hand corner, touch the Menu icon > Communities.
  3. Touch the name of the community > touch the down arrow > Invite people.
  4. Next to “Only you”, touch the text and type the names of people, circles or email addresses you want to invite.
  5. In the “Share your thoughts” box, you can explain a bit more about your community or why you’d like people to join.
  6. In the upper right-hand corner, touch Invite.

Cancel an invitation to join your community
If you're the owner or moderator of a community and you change your mind about someone you’ve invited or someone who's been invited by another member of the community, you can take back their invitation.

Important: If someone invites an email address that isn't associated with a Google+ account to a community that anyone can join, you won't see their invitation or be able to cancel it. 

Tip: If you need to remove someone who's already joined your community, you can follow the instructions included in the "Remove members" section of this article.

Computer

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the upper left-hand corner, click the drop-down menu  > click Communities.
  3. Click your community.
  4. In the bottom left-hand corner, find the "Members" section and click See all.
  5. Near the top left, click the drop-down menu next to Members  > Invited.
  6. Find the person you want to uninvite > in the top right-hand corner of the box with their name in it, click the down arrow  > Cancel invitation.

Android app

  1. Open the Google+ app .
  2. Near the top right-hand corner, touch the expand arrow  > My Communities  > name of your community.
  3. Below the name of your community, touch the linked text that lists the number of members.
  4. In the top left-hand corner, touch All members > Invited.
  5. Find the person you want to uninvite > to the right of their name, touch the three-dot menu  > Cancel invitation.

Mobile browser
You can't cancel someone's community invitation on a mobile browser. Please use a computer or the Google+ app instead.

iPhone/iPad app

  1. Open the Google+ app .
  2. In the upper left-hand corner, touch the Menu icon  > Communities.
  3. Touch the name of the community.
  4. Below the name of your community, touch the linked text that lists the number of members.
  5. At the top centre of the screen, touch Members > Invited.
  6. Find the person you want to uninvite > to the right of their name, touch the down arrow  > Cancel invitation.
Edit the information about your community

People will read the information on your community’s profile to understand what the group is about. Keeping your community’s profile up to date will help new and prospective members to have the latest information.

Tip: If your community has more than 500 members, you won’t be able to change its name.

Computer

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the upper left-hand corner, click the drop-down menu > Communities.
  3. Click the name of your community.
  4. In the top left-hand corner, click the Gear icon > Edit community.
  5. Make your changes > in the top right-hand corner, click Save.

Android app/Mobile browser/iPhone/iPad app

You can’t edit the information about your community on mobile devices. Please use a computer instead.

Add categories to your community

You can add categories to your community to guide discussions and help members find the topics that they’re most interested in. For example, if your community is about playing in a band, you might want to have a category for each type of instrument (brass, percussion, strings).

Computer

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the top left-hand corner, click the drop-down menu > Communities.
  3. Click the name of your community.
  4. Near the top left-hand corner, click the Gear icon > Edit community.
  5. Just above the “About this community” box, click Add category > type in your category.

Android app/Mobile browser/iPhone/iPad app

You can't add categories to your community on mobile devices. Please use a computer instead.

Remove members

As a moderator or owner, you can remove people from your community. For example, you may want to do this If a member of your community is harassing others or posting inappropriate content.

Android app

  1. Open the Google+ app .
  2. Near the top right-hand corner, touch the down arrow > My Communities > name of the community you want to remove people from.
  3. Below the name of the community, at the top of the screen, touch the number of members.
  4. Find the person you want to remove or ban > to the right of their name, touch the Menu button > touch Remove from community or Ban from community.
    • If you remove a member, they’ll no longer be part of the community, but they can join or ask to join again.
    • If you ban a member, they won’t be able to join unless an owner or moderator removes the ban.

Computer

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the upper left-hand corner, click the drop-down menu > Communities.
  3. Click the name of your community.
  4. In the top left-hand corner of your community’s profile information, find the “Members” section > click See all.
  5. Find the member you want to remove or ban > click their name > next to their name, click the drop-down menu .
  6. Click Remove from community or Ban from community.
    • If you remove a member, they’ll no longer be part of the community, but they can join or ask to join again.
    • If you ban a member, they won’t be able to join unless an owner or moderator removes the ban.

Mobile browser

You can’t remove or ban someone from a community on a mobile browser. Please use a computer or the Google+ app instead.

iPhone/iPad app

  1. Open the Google+ app .
  2. Touch the Menu icon in the upper left-hand corner > Communities > the name of the community you want to remove people from.
  3. At the top of the page, touch the number of members below the name of the community.
  4. Find the person you want to remove or ban > touch the down arrow to the right of their name > touch Remove from community or Ban from community.
    • If you remove a member, they’ll no longer be part of the community, but they can join or ask to join again.
    • If you ban a member, they won’t be able to join unless an owner or moderator removes the ban.
Moderate community posts

If you’re an owner or manager of a community, you should make sure that everyone enjoys the experience when they visit or post in your community. This may mean promoting (pinning) great posts and deleting offensive content.

Tip: If you delete a post, it will be removed from the community. However, people may be able to find the post in other ways.

Android app

  1. Open the Google+ app .
  2. Near the top right-hand corner, touch the down arrow > My Communities > name of the community that you want to edit.
  3. Find the post that you want to moderate.
  4. Touch the post > touch the Menu icon/button .
    • To feature (pin) a post, touch Pin post. When you pin a post, it will remain at the top of your community’s homepage until an owner or moderator unpins it, pins another post or deletes the post.
    • To remove a post, touch Remove post.
    • To remove a post, report the post as spam or abuse and ban the user, touch Remove, report and ban.

Computer

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the top left-hand corner, click the drop-down menu > Communities.
  3. Click the name of your community.
  4. Click the post that you want to moderate > in the top right-hand corner of the post, click the drop-down menu .
  5. Make your choice.

iPhone/iPad app

  1. Open the Google+ app .
  2. In the upper left-hand corner, touch the Menu icon > Communities > the name of the community that you want to edit.
  3. Touch the post that you want to moderate.
  4. In the top right-hand corner, touch the Gear icon > make your choice.
    • To feature (pin) a post, click Pin post. When you pin a post, it will remain at the top of your community’s homepage until an owner or moderator unpins it, pins another post or deletes the post.
    • To remove a post, touch Remove post.
    • To remove a post, report the post as spam or abuse and ban the user, touch Remove, report and ban.

Important: Some posts may be automatically categorised as possible spam. If this happens, the posts will only be shown in the community owners and moderators. They can then accept or reject them from the community.

To accept or reject posts that may be spam:

Android app

  1. Open the Google+ app .
  2. Near the top right-hand corner, touch the down arrow > My Communities > name of the community that you want to edit.
  3. If you have any of these posts, they’ll include a message at the top that says “This post might be spam. Touch to restore or remove”.
    • To stop the post from being shared with the community, touch the post > touch Remove.
    • To allow the post to be shared with the community, touch the post > touch Make visible.

Computer

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the upper left-hand corner, click the drop-down menu > select Communities.
  3. Click your community. If you have any of these posts, you’ll see a red banner in the top right-hand corner of your community that says “Posts flagged as spam”.
    • To stop the post from being shared with the community, click the red banner in the top right-hand corner > find the post you want to moderate > click Reject.
    • To allow the post to be shared with the community, click the red banner in the top right-hand corner > find the post you want to moderate > click Approve.

Mobile browser

You can’t moderate possible spam on a mobile browser. Please use a computer or the Google+ app instead.

iPhone/iPad app

  1. Open the Google+ app .
  2. In the top left-hand corner, touch the Menu icon > Communities > the name of the community.
  3. If you have any of these posts, they’ll include a message at the top that says “This post might be spam. Only moderators can see it”.
    • To stop the post from being shared with the community, touch the post > touch Remove > in the bottom right-hand corner, touch Yes.
    • To allow the post to be shared with the community, touch the post > touch Make visible > in the bottom right-hand corner, touch Yes.
Add moderators and owners

Moderators can help you manage your community’s content by sharing posts, adding categories, helping guide discussions and removing members. Owners can help with the same things as moderators, but they can also promote people to moderators or owners and delete the community.

Tip: Unless you're using Google+ for work or school, you can't promote someone to an owner until they've been a moderator for at least two weeks.

Android app

  1. Open the Google+ app .
  2. Near the top right-hand corner, touch the down arrow > My Communities > name of the community that you want to edit.
  3. At the top of the screen, below the name of the community, touch the number of members.
  4. Find the person you want to promote > to the right of their name, touch the Menu button > touch Promote to moderator.

To make someone an owner, follow steps 1 to 4, then click Promote to owner.

Computer

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the upper left-hand corner, click the drop-down menu > Communities.
  3. Click the name of your community.
  4. In the bottom left-hand corner of your community’s profile information, find the “Members” section > click See all.
  5. Find the member you want to promote > click their name > next to their name, click the drop-down menu .
  6. Click Promote from member to moderator. You’ll know you've added them when you can see a star in the bottom left-hand corner of their photo.

To make someone an owner, follow steps 1 to 4, then click Promote from moderator to owner.

Mobile browser

You can’t add moderators or owners to a community on a mobile browser. Please use a computer or the Google+ app instead.

iPhone/iPad app

  1. Open the Google+ app .
  2. In the upper left-hand corner, touch the Menu icon > Communities > the name of the community that you want to edit.
  3. Below the name of the community, at the top of the screen, touch the number of members.
  4. Find the person you want to promote > to the right of their name, touch the down arrow > touch Promote to moderator. You’ll know that you’ve added them when it says Moderator next to their name.

To make someone an owner, follow steps 1 to 4, then touch Promote to owner.

Delete your community

If you’re the owner of a group and you don’t want your community to exist any more, you can delete it. Once you’ve deleted a community, there’s no way to get it back.

Computer

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the upper left-hand corner, click the drop-down menu > Communities.
  3. Click the name of your community.
  4. Near the top left-hand corner, click the Gear icon > Edit community.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the page > in the lower left-hand corner, click Delete this community.
  6. Tick the box to confirm that you understand that deleting your community is permanent > Delete community.

Android app/Mobile browser/iPhone/iPad app

You can’t delete a community on mobile devices. Please use a computer instead.

Three tips for managing your community

  • Write a welcome post: When you create a community, write a post to set expectations about what you want to see in the community and welcome new members.
  • Experiment with your posts to learn what your members like: Try posting different types of content, like pictures, questions or general updates. The posts that get the most comments and +1s will help you learn what your members like the most.
  • Check your community daily: Visit regularly and encourage members to have conversations and share ideas. You can then participate in their conversations by posting, leaving comments and +1'ing posts.
