Hangouts On Air apps

You can use various features and apps to improve your Hangouts On Air experience. For example, you can share controls of the broadcast with others and allow viewers to ask you questions.

Features

Embed video on another website

You can let people view a Hangout On Air from any website using the embed feature. This feature puts a video player with the Hangout On Air onto any website.

  1. On your computer, open plus.google.com/hangouts/onair.
  2. Click Create a Hangout On Air. Read more about starting a Hangout On Air.
  3. On the bottom right of the video window, click Links.
  4. Copy the video embed code, YouTube page URL, or Event page URL.
  5. Go to the website where you'd like to stream or show the Hangout On Air.
  6. Paste the code. Follow the website's instructions on how to embed a live video player or embed another website's link onto a page.
  7. A video player with the Hangout On Air or the website link will now appear on the page.
Hide someone in a Hangout On Air
  1. On your computer, open plus.google.com/hangouts/onair.
  2. Click Create a Hangout On Air. Read more about starting a Hangout On Air.
  3. At the bottom of the video window, point to someone's photo.
  4. Click Hide from broadcast.

When you hide someone:

  • The person's audio and video won't show in the broadcast.
  • Other people in the Hangout On Air can still see the hidden person, but the person's photo will be dimmed.

Apps

If you turn an app on or off for a Hangout On Air, it will stay on or off the next time you host a broadcast.

Cameraman app
You can control whether to show or hide participants in your Hangout On Air using the Cameraman app. By default, all Hangouts On Air have the Cameraman app so that you can control the settings.

Change audio or video of participants as they join

  1. On your computer, open plus.google.com/hangouts/onair.
  2. Click Create a Hangout On Air. Read more about starting a Hangout On Air.
  3. Point to the left side of the video window, and a bar will appear.
  4. Click the Cameraman icon .
  5. Choose Yes or No for the broadcast settings below:
    1. "As guests join, hide their audio and video from my broadcast?"
    2. "Broadcast the large video that I see to my audience and hide the other video feeds?"
    3. "New guests in my large (3+) broadcast are muted when they join?"

To change the audio or video of participants who are already in the Hangout, use the Control Room app.

Control room app

As the host of a Hangout On Air, you have control over people participating in the broadcast.

  1. When the Hangout On Air starts, point to the left side of the video window, and a bar will appear.
  2. Click the Control Room app .

To the right of the video window, you will see the following options for each person in the Hangout On Air:

  • Mute or unmute a person's audio: Turn off someone's sound by clicking the mute icon . You'll know the audio is muted when icon turns red. Click it again to turn the audio back on.
  • Mute or unmute a person's video: Turn off someone's video by clicking the camera icon . You'll know the video is turned off when the icon turns red. Click it again to turn the camera back on.
  • Control a person's audio level: Click the audio bar next to someone's photo. Scroll left to lower the volume. Scroll right to raise the volume.
  • Give another person control for the Hangout On Air: Point to someone's name and click the dropdown menu . Choose Give controls. You'll give the person the same control as you have for the entire Hangout On Air. They'll be able to do things like control another person's audio or video level. You can't remove someone's control after you've given it.
  • Eject a person from the Hangout On Air: Point to someone's name and click the dropdown menu . Choose Eject. The person will be removed from the Hangout On Air and can no longer participate.
Q&A app

As a host, you can collect questions from viewers before or during your Hangout On Air with the Q&A app. You can view the questions and the answers after the Hangout On Air ends by playing the video.

Host actions

Turn the Q&A app on or off

Only the host can turn the Q&A app on or off, and they can only change it before the broadcast starts.

  1. On your computer, open plus.google.com/hangouts/onair.
  2. Click Create a Hangout On Air. Under "Start time," select Later. Read more about starting a Hangout On Air.
  3. Go to the Hangout On Air event page.
  4. Click the Q&A app .

Answer questions

  1. When the Hangout On Air starts, point to the left side of the video window, and a bar will appear.
  2. Click the Q&A app .
  3. When viewers start posting questions, click Select under a question. It will be marked as "Currently answering."
  4. When you're done answering the question, click Done. Marking questions done will create a note in the video, so viewers can jump to specific questions when watching the recording of the broadcast.

View submitted questions

At the top right of the Hangout On Air window, click Questions, Answered questions, or Spam.

If the host turned on the Q&A app, you'll see a section on the right of the Hangout On Air video window.

Ask a question

  1. At the bottom right of the video window, click Ask a new question.
  2. Type your question.
  3. Click Submit.

To delete your own questions, at the top right of the question, click the dropdown button  > Delete.

View questions

In the Q&A app section, you can see the questions you submitted, what others have asked, and the answered questions. The question currently being answered automatically appears at the top, and unanswered questions are displayed below it.

  1. At the top right of the video window, click Questions.
  2. To view your questions or the answered questions, select Your questions or Answered questions.

You can vote for questions you like by clicking +1 below the question.

Find answers in the video recording

  1. At the top right of the video window, click Questions.
  2. Choose Answered Questions.
  3. Place your mouse over the question you'd like to view.
  4. On the bottom right of the question, click the arrow icon . The video will jump to that question.

Navigate in the video recording

If you want to watch a specific part of the video, click the timeline to jump to that part of the video during or after the Hangout On Air. The question that goes with the section will be highlighted to the right in the "Answered Questions" list.

Things to keep in mind:

  • The Q&A app will only appear if the host turns it on before the broadcast begins.
  • The Q&A app is unavailable when watching Hangouts On Air through YouTube.
  • If you're viewing the broadcast from the YouTube page or embedded on another website, annotations are available on the video. The annotations will point viewers to the Hangout On Air page with the Q&A app.
  • Mobile viewers can only see Q&A, but can't submit or vote for questions.
Showcase app

You can share products, articles, content, and websites with viewers while in a Hangout On Air with the Showcase app. For example, you can show your audience a product you're selling, an interesting article about your company, or a link to download an app in the Google Play Store.

During the broadcast, you can share links with your audience, and they can open the links without interrupting your broadcast.

Your Google+ profile and your YouTube channel also will show automatically at the top of your list of links. If you want to hide your Google+ profile and your YouTube channel, uncheck the box next to "Show item."

Turn the Showcase app on or off

Only the host can turn the Showcase app on or off, and they can only change it before the broadcast starts.

  1. On your computer, open plus.google.com/hangouts/onair.
  2. Click Create a Hangout On Air. Under "Start time," select Later. Read more about starting a Hangout On Air.
  3. Go to the Hangout On Air event page.
  4. Click the Showcase app Showcase icon.

Add links to your Hangout On Air

  1. On your computer, open plus.google.com/hangouts/onair.
  2. Click Create a Hangout On Air. Read more about starting a Hangout On Air.
  3. Point to the left side of the video window, and a bar will appear.
  4. Click the Showcase app Showcase icon.
  5. At the top right of the video window, paste the website link you want to share with your audience in the Showcase app text box.
  6. To change the content of the link you're sharing, click Edit.
    • Title: Make the title descriptive so your audience can easily know what it is.
    • Images: To delete an image featured with the item, click the delete icon Showcase delete icon.
    • Summary: Add a short summary about the item.
  7. Click Done.
  8. Check the box next to "Show item." If you want to hide your listing later, uncheck the box next to "Show item."

If you added a link to something in the Google Play Store, a Shop button will appear. All other links will show a More button to take the viewer to the website.

Delete a link

You can delete your Showcase links or links to your Google+ profile and YouTube channel.

  1. Point to the left side of the video window, and a bar will appear.
  2. Click the Showcase app Showcase icon.
  3. Click the item in your list.
  4. Click Edit > Delete item.
Applause app

When a host has turned on the Applause app, viewers can express their opinions with a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

Only viewers can like or dislike the Hangout On Air through the Applause app. But everyone, including participants and hosts, will see where people liked or disliked different parts of the broadcast.

A graph will display throughout the broadcast to show what people liked and disliked.

Host actions

  4. Click the Applause app .

See what people like or dislike

  1. On your computer, open plus.google.com/hangouts/onair.
  2. Click Create a Hangout On Air. Read more about starting a Hangout On Air.
  3. You'll see two colored areas that show how people feel about the Hangout On Air.
    • Green area: The green points on the graph show where people liked what was said or shown in the broadcast.
    • Red area: The red points on the graph show people disliked what was said or shown in the broadcast.
  4. Click the circles along the line to go to that part of the broadcast to see what people liked or disliked. Or you can click a specific point in the broadcast's timeline to see what people's opinions were for that part of the Hangout On Air.

If the host turned on the Applause app, you'll see a section on the bottom of the Hangout On Air video window.

Like or dislike something in a Hangout On Air

At the bottom of the video window, click the thumbs-up or thumbs-down icons.

  • Thumbs up Applause thumbs up button: You can show your approval in the Hangout On Air. When you click the thumbs-up icon, you'll hear applause, but others in the broadcast won't hear it.
  • Thumbs down : You can show your disapproval in the Hangout On Air. When you click the thumbs-down icon, you'll hear booing, but others in the broadcast won't hear it.

See what people like or dislike

  1. In the video window, you'll see two colored areas that show how people feel about the Hangout On Air.
    • Green area: The green points on the graph show where people liked what was said or shown in the broadcast.
    • Red area: The red points on the graph show where people disliked what was said or shown in the broadcast.
  2. Click the circles along the line to go to that part of the broadcast to see what people liked or disliked. Or you can click a specific point in the broadcast's timeline to see what people's opinions were for that part of the Hangout On Air.
