Hangouts On Air apps

You can use a variety of features and apps to improve your Hangouts On Air experience. For example, you can share controls of the broadcast with others and allow viewers to ask you questions.

If you turn on or off an app for a Hangout On Air, it will stay on or off the next time you host a broadcast.

Here are some features and apps available in Hangouts On Air:

Embed

You can let people view a Hangout On Air from any website using the embed feature. This feature puts a video player with the Hangout On Air onto any website.

  1. Go to your Hangout On Air
  2. On the bottom right of the video call window, click Links.
  3. Copy the video embed code, YouTube page URL, or Event page URL.
  4. Go to the website where you'd like to stream or show the Hangout On Air.
  5. Paste the code. Follow the website's instructions on how to embed a live video player or embed another website's link onto a page.
  6. A video player with the Hangout On Air or the website link will now appear on the page.
Cameraman app
You can control whether to show or hide participants in your Hangout On Air using the Cameraman app . By default, all Hangouts On Air have the Cameraman app so that you can control the settings.

Hide someone in a Hangout On Air

  1. Move your mouse over someone's photo in the bar at the bottom of the video window.
  2. Click the hide video icon to show or hide the participant.

When you hide a person, this is what happens:

  • The person's audio and video won't show in the broadcast.
  • Other people in the Hangout On Air can still see the hidden person, but the person's photo will be grayed out.

Change a participant's audio or video feed

  1. Go to your Hangout On Air window.
  2. Move your mouse to the left side of the Hangout On Air screen.
  3. Click the Cameraman icon
  4. Choose Yes or No for the broadcast settings below:
    1. "As guests join, hide their audio and video from my broadcast?"
    2. "Broadcast the large video that I see to my audience and hide the other video feeds?"
    3. "New guests in my large (3+) broadcast are muted when they join?"
Q&A app

As a host, you can collect questions from viewers before or during your Hangout On Air with the Q&A app . Only the host can turn on the app. You can also view the questions and the answers after the Hangout On Air by playing the video.

Turn the Q&A app on or off

The host can only turn the Q&A app on or off before the broadcast. You can't change this during the broadcast. 

  1. Go to the Hangout On Air event page.
  2. Click the Q&A app   . 
  3. Once viewers start posting questions, click Select under a question to mark it as the "Currently answering" question.
  4. Click Done when you're finished answering the question. By marking when you answer a question, it also will note it in the video, and viewers can jump to specific questions when seeing the recording of the broadcast.

To view questions and which ones were answered or considered spam, go to the top right side of the Hangout On Air window. Then hosts can select "Questions," "Answered questions," or "Spam."

Ask a question

  1. If the host turned on the Q&A app, you'll see a section on the right side of the Hangout On Air to post a question.
  2. At the bottom right corner of the viewing window, click Ask a new question.
  3. Type your question.
  4. Click Submit.

To delete your own questions, click the   dropdown menu on the top right corner of the question and choose Delete.

View questions
During a Hangout On Air, the Q&A app will show on the right side of the viewing window. You can see the questions you submitted, what others have asked, and the answered questions. The question currently being answered automatically appears at the top, and unanswered questions are displayed below it.

  1. Click Questions.
  2. To view your questions or the answered questions, select "Your questions" or "Answered questions."

You can vote for questions you like by clicking +1 below the question.

Find answers in the video

You can jump directly to the answer you're looking for.

  1. In the top right corner of the screen, choose Answered Questions.
  2. Place your mouse over the question you'd like to view. On the bottom right of that question, you'll see an arrow if the question has been answered.
  3. Click the arrow, and the video will jump to that question.

If you want to watch a specific part of the video, click on the timeline to jump to that part of the video during or after the Hangout On Air. The question that goes with the section will be highlighted to the right in the "Answered Questions" list.

Things to keep in mind:

  • The Q&A app will only appear if the host enables it before the broadcast begins.
  • The Q&A app is unavailable when watching Hangouts On Air through YouTube. But if you're viewing the broadcast from the YouTube page or embedded on another website, annotations are available on the video. The annotations will point viewers to the Hangout On Air page with the Q&A app.
  • Currently, mobile viewers can only see Q&A but can't submit or vote for questions.
Control room app

As the host of a Hangout on Air, you have control over people participating in the broadcast.

When you place your mouse over the Apps toolbar on the left side, click the  Control Room app to see the following options for each person on the right side of the Hangout On Air:

  • Mute/Unmute a person's audio: Click the mute icon  to turn off a person's sound. You'll know the audio is muted when icon turns red. Click it again to turn the audio back on.
  • Mute/Unmute a person's video: Click the video icon  to turn off a person's video. You'll know the video is turned off when the icon turns red. Click it again to turn the camera back on.
  • Control a person's audio level: Click the audio bar next to the person's photo. Scroll left to lower the volume. Scroll right to raise the volume.
  • Give another person control for the Hangout On Air: Place your mouse over the person's name. Click the  dropdown button to the right of the person's name and choose Give controls. You'll give the person the same control as you have for the entire Hangout on Air. That means they'll be able to do things like control another person's audio or video level.
  • Eject a person from the Hangout On Air: Place your mouse over the person's name. Click the  dropdown button to the right of the person's name and choose Eject. The person will be removed from the Hangout On Air and no longer be able to participate.
Showcase app

You can share products, articles, content, and websites with viewers while in a Hangout On Air with the Showcase app. For example, you can show your audience a product you're selling, an interesting article about your company, or a link to download an app in the Google Play Store.

During the broadcast, you can share links with your audience, and they can open the links without interrupting your broadcast.

Your Google+ profile and your YouTube channel also will show automatically at the top of your list of links. If you want to hide your Google+ profile and your YouTube channel, uncheck the box next to "Show item."

Turn the Showcase app on or off

If you schedule your Hangout On Air through a Google+ Event page, the Showcase app will be on by default. Before you start hosting a Hangout on Air, you can turn the Showcase app off. You can't change your mind after the broadcast starts.

  1. Go to the Hangout On Air's Google+ Event page.
  2. Click the Showcase app Showcase icon.

Add links to your Hangout On Air

Showcase Show
  1. Go to the website you'd like to share and copy the website's address.
  2. Go to your Hangout On Air window.
  3. On the left of the Hangout On Air screen, click the Showcase app Showcase icon.
  4. On the top right side of the Hangout On Air window, paste the website link you want to share with your audience in the Showcase app text box.
  5. To change the content of the link you're sharing, click Edit.
    • Title: Make the title descriptive so your audience can easily know what it is.
    • Images: To delete an image featured with the item, click the delete icon Showcase delete icon.
    • Summary: Add a short summary about the item.
  6. Click Done.
  7. Click the checkbox next to "Show item." If you want to hide your listing later, uncheck the box next to "Show item."

If you added a link to something in the Google Play Store, a Shop button will appear. All other links will show a More button to take the viewer to the website.

Delete a link

You could delete your Showcase links or those to your Google+ profile and YouTube channel.

  1. Put your mouse on the left side of the Hangout On Air screen.
  2. Click the Showcase app Showcase icon.
  3. Click the item in your list.
  4. Click Edit.
  5. Click Delete item.

 

Applause app

When a host has turned on the Applause app  for a Hangout on Air, viewers can express their opinions with a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

A graph will display throughout the broadcast to show what people liked and disliked.

For Hosts: Turn the Applause app on or off 

If you schedule your Hangout On Air through a Google+ Event page, the Applause app  will be on by default. Before you start hosting a Hangout on Air, you can turn the Applause app off. You can't change your mind after the broadcast starts.

  1. Go to the Hangout On Air's Google+ Event page.
  2. Click the Applause app  ​ . 

For Viewers: Like or dislike something in a Hangout On Air

Only viewers can like or dislike the Hangout On Air through the Applause app. But everyone, including participants and hosts, will see where people liked or disliked different parts of the broadcast.

  1. Start your Hangout On Air.
    • Computer: Go to the Hangout On Air's Google+ Event page. Click Play to start the Hangout On Air.
    • Mobile device: Open the Google+ app on your mobile device and go to your Hangout On Air's Google+ Event page. Click Play to start the Hangout On Air.
  2. Below the broadcast window, click the thumbs-up icon or the thumbs-down icon .
    • Thumbs up Applause thumbs up button: You can show your approval in the Hangout On Air. When you click the thumbs-up icon  Applause thumbs up button, you'll hear applause, but others in the broadcast won't hear it.
    • Thumbs down  : You can show your disapproval in the Hangout On Air. When you click the thumbs-down icon  , you'll hear booing, but others in the broadcast won't hear it.

See what people like or dislike

You can see what other people liked or disliked during the broadcast through the graph below the Hangout On Air.

  1. Start your Hangout On Air through your computer or mobile device.
    • Computer: Go to the Hangout On Air's Google+ Event page. Click Play to start the Hangout On Air.
    • Mobile device: Open the Google+ app on your mobile device and go to your Hangout On Air's Google+ Event page. Click Play to start the Hangout On Air.
  2. You'll see two colored areas that show how people feel about the Hangout On Air.
    • Green area: This shows where people liked what was said or shown in the broadcast.
    • Red area: This shows where people disliked what was said or shown in the broadcast.

  3. Click the circles along the line to go to that part of the broadcast to see what people liked or disliked. Or you can click a specific point in the broadcast's timeline to see what people's opinions were for that part of the Hangout On Air.
