Create your bulk upload spreadsheet

Please read this list of common issues to make sure that your upload can be verified as quickly as possible.

To create a bulk upload file for your business, you'll need to format a spreadsheet locally and upload it to your dashboard. The spreadsheet can be in any of the following formats: .csv, .txt, .xls, .tsv, .xlsx, and .ods. You will need to create a header row for your document, which you can copy from this template.

Be sure to follow the instructions below for each field. Not all fields need to be completed before uploading the spreadsheet. The interface will prompt you to fill in any empty cells beneath required headers, but you may update them in bulk using the management interface. You will also see errors highlighted in your account that need action. Learn more about error messages.

You may capitalize the first letter of each word or include up to a four-letter acronym. However, entire words should not be capitalized.

See valid address formats and best practices in our Places for Business quality guidelines. (Maximum 80 characters)

Main Phone

This main phone number will appear on Google (area code and phone number). Provide a phone number that connects to your individual business location as directly as possible. For example, you should provide an individual location phone number in place of a call center. Phone numbers must be valid in the country where your listing is located.

Category

You may add between one and five supported categories to each listing. The categories supported in each country can be found using the in-product dashboard as outlined below. Please choose the categories that would best describe your location to your customers.

To add a category:

  1. Visit https://places.google.com/manage/
  2. Select Add a location
  3. Start typing name of the country where your listings will be located; auto-complete will bring up supported countries.
  4. Start typing the category that best describes your business; auto-complete will bring up supported categories.
  5. Copy and paste the name of the supported category into your spreadsheet. You can add more than one category to your spreadsheet by using commas as a separators.

If you don't see your desired category appear, please select the next best option. If you think a category that primarily describes your business is missing, you can send a request by clicking on the "send feedback" link in the bulk uploader tool. We will add such requests for consideration during our periodic revision of the category list.

The bulk upload tool previously used a different set of category standards. Free-form categories are no longer supported. Numerical codes and categories from the previous list will be recognized as valid inputs for now, but will eventually be unsupported.

Store Code

Store code is a unique ID that you assign to each of your locations to ensure that changes are applied accurately in your account. This value will not appear on Google, including Google.com and Google Maps.

An easy way to generate acceptable store codes is to list your first listing as “1”, you second as “2”, and use Google Spreadsheets to continue the numbering for all of your listings.

Store codes must:

  • be unique to a specific location
  • be under 60 characters in length
  • not contain any leading or trailing spaces
  • not contain special characters (ie. <,>) or contain an URL

Examples:
store1, store2
locationNY, locationFL, locationCA
101, 102, 103

In the event that your business moves to another location, please delete the old location from your dashboard, and add the new location with a new store code.

If you have not included store codes for some locations or you have used the same store code for multiple locations in your account, you will need to address this before you can import a new spreadsheet. Learn more about missing and duplicate store codes.

Additional fields

In addition to the required information above, you may add the following additional fields. Each country has a different set of additional field values, so make sure the values you use are appropriate for the country of your business.

Latitude and Longitude

What are latitude and longitude?

Latitude and longitude are the geographic coordinates that describe a place’s exact location. Using the earth's equator line as a reference, latitude is measured north and south. Longitude is measured east and west of the Greenwich meridian line.

Latitude values are represented by a decimal value between -90 and 90, while longitude values are between -180 and 180. For example, your latitude and longitude may be 41.879435, -87.635751.

We’ll automatically find your business’s latitude and longitude based on its address, so you don’t need to include it in your sheet before you upload it.

What if my latitude and longitude aren’t automatically detected?

If your latitude and longitude aren’t found automatically, first make sure that the address you provided for your business is correct. You can also confirm the location of your placemarker by manually moving it to the right spot on the map in your Places account.

Address Line 2

A second line for the street address of the business. You can also include information like mail boxes, suite numbers,  cross streets, and other non-essential address information. See valid address formats and best practices in our Places for Business quality guidelines. (Maximum 80 characters)
