No 5G connection with Google Pixel 5
0
Hi. I'm using the Google Pixel 5 in Switzerland. Unfortunately I'm not able to connect to any 5G network. I tried two network provider (Sunrise, Swisscom) and don't get any 5G signal while it's not a problem with a Samsung device.

How is that possible? Is there a solution?

Thanks for your help!

The device wasnt released in Switzerland so its possible the carriers are not supporting that device on their 5G networks. You will need to contact them for more help

I'm not sure if it is a problem with the provider. I had a similar issue with the Oneplus 8 and there the "carrier file" of the phone needed to be changed. Probably the same needs to be done by Google with an OTA update.

Hello OP, it's a little off topic but where did you buy the Pixel 5 in Switzerland?

Relevant Answer
The problem is not from the carriers , the frequency of the 5G network is locked by Google

Countries where only Google Pixel is sold will have 5G networks

Halo86!
You are right about Google pushing an OTA update.
I'm using my Pixel 5 in Kuwait.
And neither the 5g nor the VoLTE is working.
And with previous experience with Pixel 3.
I can tell you for sure it is Google's problem.
They need to send this OTA update to provision thrse features.
Unfortunately if they feel that they are only focusing on few countries and want us to pay for phones that doesn't work in other countries then it's fine with me, no more Google phone for me! Will find another company that respects its clients.

Same here at Hong Kong! I don't want Pixel5 be my last android phone due to not supporting VoLTE / 5G after 3G network shutdown!

I bought it at Mediamarkt Germany and use it now in Switzerland.

An OTA would definitely be the solution! It really can't be that only a few countries the 5G can be used... Google should really fix this issue as soon as possible! Some countries, like Spain and Italy, are supportet but the Pixel isn't being sold.

How can we reach out to Google? Any idea?

I have no idea.
There used to be a way to chat with a Google representative/employee in the settings.
I can't find it now.
I tried sending a feedback, go to settings -> tips and support -> send feedback.
Unfortunately I didn't receive a response.

If you guys have a better way, please share it.

Same in Romania, Google needs to allow the Pixels to connect to all 5G networks, anywhere. This issue is preventing even a person who buys and uses a Pixel in a supported country to use their phone at it's potential when roaming or traveling and using a local sim...

This problem is the same in China, only LTE can be used in 5G coverage area, and Google should not restrict users in which country/region they are willing to use 5G. because pixel 5 has provided the correct 5G frequency band.

Received the following answer from Google on Twitter: "Hi, we understand your point. 5G network support differs by carrier. Visit https://t.co/1WKesU7Np3 to learn about what carriers 5G support on Pixel phones. Make sure to check with your carrier for more details. Hope this helps."
Very weak support from Google!

This is very short sited from Google... Surely they want to expand their market share and one way to do this is by making Google devices available in more countries. There is so much demand for the Pixel line up in South Africa and i am pretty sure that 5G wont work here either. C'mon Google!

Just received an answer from my network provider (Sunrise) and they confirmed that the manufactor needs to activate the device. So it is definitely Google who has to solve the issue!

Same issue in the UAE,  Etisalat is 3500 as well and pixel 5 doesn't read it while every other phone does.  The handset it self is amazing.  I hope they come up with a solution very soon. Its shame one of the main reason i bought the phone was the 5G support.

Google please also provide support for 5G and VoLTE in Hong Kong.
Network provider told me they support all devices that support VoLTE and 5G.
We need Google to toggle the switch for it to support 5G and VoLTE in Hong Kong

How hard is it to make a phone that works worldwide? Every other manufacturer has nailed it. I can't believe google made a phone that only work in some part of the world. Very disappointed.

This really is a serious problem as Google has been marketing Pixel/nexus phones as icons of open and freedom since day one of smart phone era. But the way they operate this is more like apple approaches to me, or even worse because iPhones are officially sold almost everywhere so they won't have frequency band lock up issue.
Honestly device wise Pixel 5 is a perfect phone for me. I think I have been waiting for this phone for almost 10 years, but Google somehow chose to cripple the best phone they've ever made.

Me too, I have (and love!) a Pixel 5 in Switzerland that does not connect to Swisscom's 5G network :-(. As of today, I know from a safe source that on the provider's side everything is ready and Pixel 5 phones are not restricted in any way. It really seems that this is up to Google, probably via software update. So, Google..., could you..., please?

@caz: Thanks for your feedback. Happy to hear from a second source that 5G with Swisscom as a second network provider in Switzerland doesn't work and it isn't an issue of the provider.

It is Google's turn to fix the issue as soon as possible!

I'm currently working in telecom where I have some 5g antennas in my work lab. For fun I wanted to try my new phone there but I couldn't get any 5g. When I read the logs between the phone and the eNodeB, the phone doesn't send in the UE CAP INFO that it can do 5g, thus the network doesn't give you the info to access the 5g network and the phone stays in 4g.
Issues in on google side then.

I'm on a supported carrier (Google Fi) in a supported country (US, Portland OR) with sub-6 5G coverage that *should* be supported.

However not only does the Pixel 5 connect to LTE, I can't even see an option for preferred network type under Settings -> Network -> Mobile network so I can't confirm whether 5G is enabled or try switching it off/on or anything. This despite the support documentation listing such an option for this screen.
