Pixel 5 battery drain overnight 2 Recommended Answers 196 Replies 138 Upvotes

Got a Pixel 5 about a week ago. The phone seems to lose quite a lot of battery while being idle overnight, and there is no particular app/service that seems to be driving this. Is this defective hardware or can this be fixed by me? For context, the I'd charged to 100% (where the graph below begins), then used the phone a little (which is where the first inflection point is), then slept with no apps running in the background (which is when the battery dropped by a concerning amount), and then you see the inflection point when I woke up and started using the phone again in the morning.

I am noticing the same issue! Mine drops to about 75% overnight from a full charge.

i'm having the exact same problem.
charged my phone up to 100%, took it off charge and went to bed.
Woke up this morning 8 hours later, and despite the screen being off all that time and it just sat there idle, it was down to 67%.
No app was hogging the battery, i've tried rebooting the phone, i even tried a full factory reset yesterday morning.
i'm still having unacceptable battery drain whilst the phone is idle.
I have no idea if i need to get my phone replaced, or wait for a software update?

That is quite a bit more battery drain that you should be seeing from letting the phone sit idle overnight.

Could you try charging your phone to 100% and then leaving it in safe mode over night to see if it makes a difference to the battery drain? You can boot into safe mode using the instructions located HERE

That will help determine if there is some unknown background process causing the drain.

Thanks, I'll try overnight tonight. In the meantime, I've been at work today - where I don't touch my phone often - and my phone's just in regular mode currently, but seems the battery drain is slower now, during the day. Seems strange

Hi, I charged the phone to 100%. Then, left it on normal (non-safe) mode for about 5 hours overnight, and the battery drained down to 86%. Then, I switched to Safe mode (though not on airplane mode, meaning WiFi, Bluetooth and other radios were still on) and in about an hour, the battery drained down to 79%. This is shockingly bad standby time. You can also see there were no processes running at all in the whole time. What is going on?

Similar problem here with Pixel 5 which just started over the last day/night. Woke up this morning and the phone battery was dead, even though it had 40% the night before. Luckily I have a backup alarm, but shouldn't have to guess if my phone is going to be alive in the morning. Haven't installed anything new over the last couple of days. Restarted this morning and it seems to be working fine again for now, but not happy knowing that I might wake up to a dead phone until I can figure out what's causing this.

EDIT: Today appears to be normal for now. 3% drain over 3-4 hours standby. I noticed in the play store that there was a few updates yesterday to some Google services... thinking it may be related to that.

Another update: I turned off safe mode, went back to regular mode, but turned the WiFi off (to see if that's what was causing the drain), and the battery still went down from 79% to 73% in about an hour, whilst completely idle.

That is basically the battery gone from 100% to 73% overnight, with no usage at all. 27% lost!

The phone is barely a week old. I used a Pixel 3XL with the same apps and settings just before this Pixel 5, and that never had the same issues. Do I need a replacement or is this is a software issue?

i charged my phone to 100% last night, put it into safe mode, and then went to bed.

just checked my phone now, its still on 100%!

but when i have been having signicant battery drain whilst idle, the battery usage section in settings isn't highlighting any apps as causing a drain on the phone

Sam,

While in safe mode, did you leave wifi etc disabled? Other users about are advising that with the radios on, they still experienced the drain in Safe Mode.

Thanks,

Brian

Leaving it in safe mode seems to decrease the battery drain over night. Went from 95% to 86% I'm around 9 hrs. This is with always on screen ON and wifi enabled.

While waiting for Sam's response, I'd concur that using Safe mode with the radios on still drained the battery down. And again, in the middle of the day, now, the battery seems to consume far less energy. This has been the trend for quite a few days. Quite baffling. Also, similar to Sam, the processes that are listed to be running overnight do not add up to the battery consumed overnight. Is it possible the battery indicator itself is incorrect?

Hi Brian,

when it booted up in safe mode, the phone was in airplane mode, so wifi was off, no 4G/5G signal, bluetooth off, etc and i didn't turn them back on.

additionally, its now been 6 hours since i rebooted the phone back into normal mode, with wifi on, 5G signal, etc, and my battery is now down to 92%, but thats with me watching some youtube, a few trailers on Amazon Prime, screen on time 32 minutes out of that 6 hours.
This already feels an improvement in battery drain!
Will leave it in normal mode tonight to see what battery drain i have when i wake up in the morning.

thanks

I put the phone on Airplane mode (though not on safe mode) overnight, and the battery didn't drain at all overnight. The minute I turned off airplane mode in the morning, the battery level started dropping (quicker than I'd expect). This would lead me to believe all the drop in battery is owed to some radios being used overnight. Any idea how i can identify exactly which radio is creating the issue?

Exactly the same issue with my wife's phone. We ordered the same phones same day, mine is fine her's even when our battery percentage is the same shows the approximate remaining time 14 hour's difference! Really poor form. Please fix ASAP.

well, another day, and my phone is back to draining battery as per normal when idle.
i had charged my phone to 100%.
In the last 6 hours, it is now down to 63%, with only 1.5hours screen usage time since full charge.

There's no obvious app draining the battery as per battery usage below.
I'm trying to decide whether to hold out for a software fix, or whether i have a defective phone, and need to arrange for a replacement.

I was having serious battery draining. I moved from a Pixel 2XL and carried over a phone merger where you connect the phones together and transfer everything from the old phone to the new phone.

For the last week I've been having to put my charger.in at the end of the day at about 8 or 9. I hardly used the phone with about 1hr and a half scree on time during the day.  I was not impressed.

I have managed to fix this, simply.my.entering.safe mode and then turning off adaptive battery, restarting the phone and then turning adaptive battery back on.

To go into safe mode, press the power button then long press  the restart button on the top right.

Hope this is helpful.

Sam,

Check to see if you have Tunein installed.  If you do, uninstall it and reboot your phone.  See if that makes a difference.

Yep same problem with my new pixel 5, battery drains ~25% in standby overnight, which seems excessively high. My pixel 4 XL i think only had ~8-10% at most. Definitely something wrong that the app usage graph is not showing.

I checked but don't have it. Thanks anyway, I've been in contact with Google directly this morning asking them to please fix the issue ASAP. I think it's more a software issue as my wife's phone is behaving normally again, seems to jump back and forth.

I did a full factory reset, deleting all my data and starting afresh. The night right after the factory reset, the battery did not drain much overnight, but the next night, it was back to the same severe battery drainage.

Think what we need to know is, is this a hardware issue or a software issue. If a hardware issue, is it an issue with the battery itself, or an issue with some of the radios in the phone? Is there any way to test this and find out?

Installed AccuBattery. When the screen is off, the phone does go into deep sleep for the most part (which should conserve battery). But, even then, with the screen off and in deep sleep, the phone consumes 3.5% of battery per hour, which is frankly ridiculous. Any idea how we can see which processes are running in the background when the screen is off?

charged my pixel 5 to 99% last night, randomly woke up at 4.30am so i checked the battery down to 82% doing nothing for just over 5 hrs! After this I put it on flight mode and for the next 3-4hrs there was no drain, it stayed at 82%. So there is definitely something wrong here.

I seem to have the same issue as well. While my current 3-year old android phone consumes 1-2%, the new pixel 5 consumes about 30% battery overnight. After the first time I noticed this issue, I did a factory reset and didn't install any apps on it other than the default Google ones. Unfortunately that didn't improve the situation. The battery lasts just about a day on full charge without me using it!
According to Google customer service, the device is performing as it should since it lasted a day. They disregarded the fact that I didn't really use the phone during these 24 hours! Either way, I managed to get a replacement device. It will be interesting to see whether the issue persists.

I am having different issue considering battery, but maybe it will light some sheds of knowledge on this one.

I noticed that my Pixel 5 is not charging properly all the time. When using USB-C 3.1 from PC, the phone is apparently not charging at all (my Pixel 2 was charging super fast from this source) - I am not sure about wattage. Using included Pixel Charger (18W usb-c to usb-c) with original cable, there are some moments when it says it's charging, but the percent is not rising up. It recently happened about 15 minutes ago while charging - the phone stood still at 67%. Restart, unplug and plug [charger] seemd to helped. The phone is charging now and it's now at 90%. I don't know what is it about (hope it's software issue) but it's a pain looking at a phone after 2h and the battery is stuck at XX percent, because of this issue.

One time I have seen that after restart the battery percentage was back to normal (before restart around 65%, after restart 95%) but it doesn't seem to be that way always (including today).

While charging, the battery is quite hot, I am not sure if this is an issue.

Additional notice is that my battery life is OK. At night it drops for about 5% or less, battery lasts all day.

Is anyone else having such problems? Is Pixel 5 having some battery issues?

Hi, I am having the same issue. 25% drop from 100% over 7 hours during the night. During the day, the battery holds ok.

Is that software or hardware issue?

So I've determined in my case why the battery drain. It's 5g. I have access to 5g in my area, and it's seems even if I'm connected to wifi it'll still drain lots of battery.  When i turn off 5g and only use 4g the phone battery is a dream!! So i guess I'm no longer going to use 5g anymore, just not worth the battery drain, unless they do some smart data mode like Apple that switches between 4g and 5g to save battery.

I've had my Pixel 5 since the end of last year and it was working wonderfully: I would get 3 to 4 days out of a full charge. In the last couple of weeks, though, it seems that something has dramatically impacted the battery performance. I'm barely getting half of the previous performance. Were there some software updates? What can be done to improve this back to the old behavior? I can't imagine this sudden drop to be related to hardware.

I barely use my phone, so you can see the consistent slope of the drain over the entire period. As you can see phone idle was clearly the overwhelming majority of the time usage
