Was wondering if someone could take a look at this.

There seems to be quite a lot of units popping up where there's a gap between the display and the frame/body.

https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-5/help/assembly-problem-gap-screen-case-t4177669

I'm not the owner of the above thread but I do have the issue.

Can someone from Google clarify the issue.

Is this normal?
Does this cause issues with waterproofing?
How/why has this happened on a £600 device?

I have the same problem. What happened with quality of Google phones? I feel like Google don't care about pixels anymore. I'll have to back to oneplus.

Understand that, but

Does this effect the waterproofing at all?
What are the chances it gets worse as time goes on?
Why do some devices not suffer from this?

I've got the same problem (i added some pictures), would be nice to know if this is something to worry about and a reason to replace the phone or if it's fine. To be honest it doesn't bother me too much as long as it is not an indicator for problems with the water resistance or other future problems.

Mine has the exact same issue, and the gap - as you can see in the pics - is observable in the top left corner. Really sick and tired of this shitty QC on Pixel product. I'll contact support to request refund.

Same problem with mine. Could this result from a swollen battery? Thinking about returning it..

Same problem here.

Swapping over for another one in a couple hours so hoping that one will be okay. If not, and this is deemed "normal", l'm not sure I can tolerate a phone with poor build quality so will have to give this model a miss.

Fingers crossed as the device is really nice otherwise.

EDIT: New one has arrived and exactly the same issue. Original one received via courier from EE on 15th had gap issue, phoned EE yesterday to report and they agreed to send out a brand new replacement via courier the next day (today). This one is exactly the same with a gap in between screen and casing on left corner, not massive but noticeable if you look closely.

Really need a response from Google as contemplating returning it and giving it a miss, conflicted though as love the phone just not the gap...does it have an impact on the IP rating?

You can find man cases about this, see android-hilfe.de or XDA dev.
So i think these are not single cases.

By the way,  i changed my Pixel 5 cause the cam glass wasn't installed correctly.

So i think google shoud improve their QC

Same thing on the upper left corner of my brand new Pixel 5. :-(

If Google can clearly state that it will not affect the IP68 rating, I could manage the comestic issue.
Otherwise it will be a refund for me...

I had a similar issue too on top left corner. We need to have informations from google on this !

The phone is still IP68 with that little gap ? I don't mind the tiny gap (I initially didn't noticed it until I saw this on a forum) but I need to be sure that the phone is still IP68.

Yeah, same here, I can clearly see that on the right side of the screen it fits, but on the left side there is a gap between the screen and the body, already collecting dust. So this doesn’t seem like a one-time issue but a manufacturing fault? Someone from Google care to chime in?

I just pre-ordered this phone & a case. The release date is October 29th. Now I am worried and wonder if I should cancel. My pixel 2xl was spared from the screen issue back-in-the-day, but I'm getting tired of rolling the dice when it comes to these phones. I like the pixel phones, but it seems like every gen there is an issue :(

Im not from Google, i do have a Pixel 5 (not unboxed it yet) but if its any conselation I had an iPhone 7 and 8 that had similar problem. It comes down to the rubber gasket used to keep the water out, meaning it cant be completely flush all round.
I used my iPhone in a pool and the ocean and had no problems.

Ive got the same issue. Hard to tell on photo, but its also along the left side and top left corner. Worried Water resistance is affected, and also concerned that it could get worse as time goes on

Same issue here, it's minimal but I've noticed since day 1 that dust specks seem to get in between the chassis and the display. Only happens on the top left side for me (at the selfie camera corner), all other sides are fine.

I can even press the screen down at that corner so that it becomes flush, but once I release pressure the gap opens up again.

Hopefully it won't hurt the water resistance rating, but still very annoying that dust piles up there.

So I have an update: Went to my local reseller (that I work for half-time) and we opened 3 other Pixels. All of them with the same issue. They are going to get in contact with Google about this as they obviously can't sell them like that. I'll post an update right here.
I ended up taking the one with the smallest gap and heated it with a hairdryer and pressed it in place. Now it's kinda fine, gap still visible but very small. Waterproofing though no idea..

My phone is like this too not quite as bad as op but a gap is there I can push paper in.

Google needs to get their act together the pixel stand doesn't work properly either with the 5 if you enable keep screen off when dark it turns the display on still for notifications and then keeps the display on.

Google keeps sending me replacement stand instead of admiting it's a software issue affecting me and GF phone also found other people with issue.

For those asking about the IP68 rating - manufacturers won't ever replace a device because of water damage, no matter what rating it has.
For me that top left corner had the same issue. The gap was so big that it was obvious water could make its way through. The adhesive between frame and screen just didn't stick. Let's assume the issue is quite common.. I personally won't have my device replaced for now. Maybe once Google figures this out I'll request an RMA. Until then I'll make sure to not expose my phone to heavy rain etc.
For now, I achieved somewhat of a seal by pressing screen and body together for longer periods of time. Maybe heating the adhesive up would help if someone wants to attempt it too.

If my pre-order comes with this gap I'm going to fully return it and not look at Google's phones ever again. This horrible Quality control abuse has been going for far too long.

I would try to put some heat with a hair dryer and firmly push the screen back to close the gap for about 1 minute. This seems to be an assembly error. But, I'm a D.I.Y guy and that's me... Of course I believe the buyers with faulty devices deserve a brand new unit as it's their right.

I noticed a couple of small dust particles get trapped between the screen and the body along the top edge a couple of days ago, but otherwise mine has mostly been ok. I don't know whether there's a gasket inside keeping it water resistant, but the screen definitely does not sit completely flush against the chassis so I'd be worried if there wasn't.

I had this issue. I could run my fingernail between the screen and the body. Thought it was the design. Phone fell out my pocket yesterday after 24 hours of receiving it. Screen smashed!

One drop from about a 1m and the screen smashed! Never damaged a screen before on older phones, even after a few drops.

This problem is effecting the durability, do be careful with your phone!

Anyone with a pixel 5 should return it now. This is a manufacturing defect and it's likely to affect the waterproofing of the phone. This should be picked in QA. It's ridiculous that Google wants to sell us this device. I invite everyone to look elsewhere and not only stop buying pixel but stop using Android. This is not serious. It's a very basic defect that proves how many corners they've cut on the engineering side.

I'm returning mine as of today despite no gap. It might happen at any point due to poor design and engineering.

I returned my Pixel 5 due to heat issues, however the phone also had issues with a gap between the screen and chassis on the top left and left side, which was not uniform with the small gap around the rest of the device.

Google support both frontline and second level repeatedly told me if I get a replacement and the replacement device suffered from the same or a different issue, they would not offer a refund.

I'm in the UK and don't believe this is in line with the consumer law for this scenario.

I've returned the phone and won't be buying anything direct from Google in the future.

My Google Pixel 5 also has a gap, but not as bad as some others (the gap is smaller than my fingernail).

I still did a water test, so I held the pixel under the tap and left it in the filled sink for a few minutes.

There was no water damage to me, so the water protection is defended with me. But of course I cannot speak for the people whose gap is bigger. :/

Honestly, it's only noticable, if you look closely and in the right light.

There's nothing else wrong with the phone and it wouldn't really bother me, if it doesn't lead to other issues.
I'll wait and see if and what Google will have to say to this.

Maybe it's not a real problem and it is just the glue expanding while drying or so.

Same situation here. Sage green UK model.

On mine there is a small but noticeable uniform gap between glass and frame, enough to catch the edge of a thin piece of paper, right round the screen where it meets the body of the phone. On looking closely with a jeweller's loupe magnifier I can also see there is a similar gap where the camera glass module meets the back of the phone more noticeable at the corners of the module.

If an intended design/construction choice, it's not great as it will attract dust and crud to collect, especially if used without a case. Or more worryingly does it mean the whole screen and camera module is not fitted and bonded correctly?

So I think Google need come up with some detailed answers promptly, to prevent the wholesale returning of this phone, which otherwise had so much to offer to rehabilitate the Pixel's reputation since the Pixel 4 debacle.

Very disappointed, especially having previously gone through the Nexus 5X rattle situation, (remember that?) and subsequent concerns over the Pixel 2XL screen quality, though they turned out to be good phones for me.

Over to you Google.

I'm in the US and was about to pre-order two P5's, but now I'm holding off until Google addresses it.  It's definitely an aesthetic concern for a $700 brand new phone, and maybe an IP68 concern.

On top of that, I once had another phone a few years ago with a gap like this and it would catch and yank my beard hairs all the time.  Not pleasant!  I don't want dust and hair sticking out of my phone.  Gross.

Hope they can fix it.
