After the Android 11 update, many Pixel 4a owners (including myself) have had issues with the touchscreen sensitivity. Scrolling through apps is difficult and causes "phantom presses." Navigation gestures are often unresponsive or erratic. Gesture-based keyboards are nearly impossible to use.

https://reddit.com/r/Pixel4a users have been documenting this issue, & they have determined that the only current fix is to remove the screen protector from their 4a. This issue did not exist on the same phones with the same screen protectors when running Android 10. Some sort of screen sensitivity setting has been changed on the Pixel 4a through the Android 11 update that has made using the phone nearly impossible when a screen protector is installed. Some users also report that the issue becomes worse/more prominent when their 4a becomes hotter, like after/during charging or playing a game.

After the Android 11 update, the Pixel 4 has a touchscreen sensitivity toggle in the settings to make the phone work better with screen protectors. The 4a doesn't have this toggle, but is it possible that some software changes made on the Pixel 4 carried over to the Pixel 4a, causing this issue?

Again, as of right now, the only "solution" discovered for this issue is to remove the screen protector (or to downgrade back to Android 10). The following "fixes" were tested without success by multiple Pixel 4a owners on r/Pixel4a:
  • Reboot (sometimes seems to alleviate the issue, but doesn't fix it permanently)
  • Safe mode
  • Clearing cache of different apps
  • Changing accessibility settings
  • Factory reset

I'm posting this not as a plea for help from community members (though, I'm sure you're all lovely people), but more as an attempt to ensure that Google is made aware of this issue, as it is clearly something that can only be solved by a software update pushed to Pixel 4a devices.

Non-exhaustive list of threads of Pixel 4a owners discussing the issue on r/Pixel4a & r/GooglePixel:

I'm getting this behavior too. I called google and they ran me through some steps. I did a boot to safe mode and still had the issue. I then went back to normal mode and got a system.ui error. Google ended up telling me they'd send me a replacement phone. That said, I just removed my screen protector and now it seems to be fine. Even swipe typing is working again. Weird.

I contacted support before making this post, & they also suggested the standard troubleshooting steps (e.g., reboot, safe mode, & factory reset). It seems that the support teams (through no fault of their own) are unaware of how to troubleshoot this issue. The support rep I spoke with promised he would forward all the info I shared with him to the appropriate people so that this problem can hopefully be fixed on the software side (as it is clearly a software issue.)

Unfortunately, a replacement phone isn't going to solve this issue, as this is a software issue & not a hardware issue. Every Pixel 4a that has a screen protector installed & is running the latest version of Android 11 is susceptible to this issue.

Thank you, Li, for being yet another confirmation that the issue is caused by Android 11 not playing nicely with screen protectors.

Here's hoping Google is able to push out a software update ASAP 🤞

As this does seem to be  bug (based on what is in the original post), in order to attract the attention of the development team, please leave on-device feedback in Settings > About Phone.  Although you won't receive a personal response unless the team requires further information, this is the best way to draw issues to the team's attention and to ensure solutions can be found.

@Connor:  If you wish, you could lodge an issue on the tracker HERE and those also experiencing this problem can then 'star' the page that will provide them with email updates of any progress made.

Thank you.

Same here on the 4a...no issues until android 11 update.  Immediately after that I can barely scroll without a link being hit and texting is all kinds of mistakes.  It seems like the regular pixel 4 received an increased touch sensitivity toggle under display setting but it's not there in the 4a so maybe it's on now and we just don't have a way to turn it off?🤷‍♂️

Can confirm. Also, is it just me, or is there a reduction in fling velocity? Scrolling seems... Harder...

Same here after installing 11, the phone was extremely annoying to use, I've removed the screen protector and it didn't help much, twitter is very hard to scroll with hitting links accidentally.

Update: Rebooting seems to help.

I have the exact same issue.  Immediately after the update on my Pixel 4a screen gestures became nearly impossible to perform, can't scroll without it opening links, and texting was impossible.  The issue caused me to lose my Swype + Dragon keyboard which I've managed to keep since it was in Beta.  I was unaware it was no longer available in Google Play and I deleted it in order to re-download it.  Now it's gone for good.  I removed the screen protector, a thick glass one with a thick layer of polycarbonate film.  The screen protector sounds and feels like plexiglass, but can't be scratched with my pocketknife blade.  As soon as I removed it, I was able to glide type on the Gboard and successfully and easily use gestures, scroll through news feed, etc.

I have created an issue here. I put it under the Android public tracker although from the description that appears to be for apps developers. Regardless I'm hoping that if it's incorrect it will be redirected.

I, too, have removed my screen protector. That seems to have assisted with some of the extra taps and scrolling issues but this is hardly ideal.

I am getting the same thing. It interferes with scrolling any significant size page, interferes with trying to type (every 20 or so letters doesn't register due to what seems like a conflicting "click" elsewhere), and if I drag ONE fingertip on the screen, it will often zoom rather than scroll.  This absolutely needs to be fixed.  I have a glass screen protector from a reputable company, just like I've had with all my other phones, worked fine before the upgrade to 11.  Totally not OK or usable.

After updating to Android 11, my Pixel3a touchscreen became unresponsive unless running in safe mode.  Even then the system tends to lag and the screen starts to freeze up.

Sometimes functionality returns after pressing the power button, but other times when I don't hear the screen show off sound, I know it's time to use the power button + down arrow to reset the phone.

I've reached out to GoogleFi and they recommend sending the phone to an approved repair shop for physical inspection.  I told them that it appears to be a software bug given that screen functionality returns after multiple factory resets and/or using safe mode.

Has anyone noticed that the recovery mode goes to the "no command" screen with an image of a dead Android icon?

I forgot to mention that I created an issue on Issue Tracker like Penelope suggested (it was late last night 😅). I'll admit that I'm not fully aware of how Issue Tracker works. I created it under Android Public Tracker > System, as that seemed like the most appropriate component for this issue.

This is the link to the issue, but shortly after creating it, I was told by a pop-up that my access to the issue was denied. Again, I'm not very familiar with Issue Tracker. I would guess this either means the issue I created is under review, & therefore, not viewable, or it was rejected completely because I did something wrong when creating it. My access is also denied for the issue linked to by Dragonspke. I will check both issues in the future to see if I am able to view them after some time (unless one of you tells me that they'll never be viewable based on what I've described.)

Update: I did a power cycle and after boot it was so bad it took me about 10 attempts to draw my unlock pattern, because it wouldn't let me swipe long enough, and I swipe pretty quickly.  Anyway, I saw somewhere else that the problem is made worse from heat, and my screen was noticably warm to the touch.  Put it on the charger for about an hour, picked it back up, phone was much colder, and the problem is now drastically better, almost gone so far in about a half hour of usage.  Haven't done any graphically intensive stuff yet, but the heat theory seems very possible.

Same issue I'm facing with my Pixel 3A right after the android 11 update. Top notification bar never responding at first swip, apps are crashing, suddenly the phone has become impossible to use. Come on google, fix this ASAP.

I'm also having the same issues after the phone update. Nothing seems to fix it and I'm wary of removing the screen protector or having to downgrade to Android 10.

My new Pixel4a is nearly useless now I have updated to Android 11. Going back to my Pixel3aXL and not going to update it.

Exact same issue...screen is hyper sensitive, making scrolling through any app nearly impossible. Glide feature on keyboard is also erratic. Called customer support who referred me to a repair shop. Not wasting my time. I loved the pixel 4a and now can't stand to use the phone. I will not be taking off the screen protector; can't afford to get those scratches on there. How can I downgrade to Android 10?

I think it's not too sensitive, is not sensitive. with some drawing app, I can only draw a broken line, which means the screen cannot sense your finger randomly. It happens only right after upgraded to android 11.

Also have the same issue. If you enable developer mode and then enable both "show taps" and "pointer location" the screen blitzes out. It will turn purple and flip around the vertical axis.

I've since flashed back to Android 10 and it's working as expected.

There's very clearly something wrong with Android 11 on (at least some) Pixel 4A phones.

Same here.  I ran 10 with no problems for a few days, upgraded to 11 and now I get phantom taps when scrolling.  I have a screen protector but I don't want to remove it and risk scratching my brand new phone.

I just received my 4a and it came with Android 11 out of the box. As I installed the screen protector even before I turned on the phone I thought the touchscreen had dead touch zones when I noticed the weird swiping behaviours. Hopefully all these reports can get the attention of Google to roll out a fix soon - the erratic swipes only become obvious when using gestures to go into recent apps screen and in Pokemon Go when throwing curveballs.

Same issue here. It appeared after activating Android Auto to use on my vehicles head unit. Clearing that AA cache and storage space seemed to work on my device. I tried this three times and received the same results. I factory reset three phone, updated all Google apps, (Google Play Services didn't seem to Auto update). Issues seemed to subside. While using the phone outside in 80°F weather for a couple minutes the issue came back. The phone was noticably warm to the touch. Per suggestion, I took my screen protector off. No issues as of this moment.

Same issue for me immediately after updating to android 11 - worked flawlessly on Android 10. I got a spigen screen protector. Noticed as soon as the battery temperature reaches 100F according to AccuBattery I start having swiping/scrolling issues. Once it cools down one or two degrees, it's fine. Anyone know if Google has acknowledged the issue?

Exactly the same issues happened for my pixel 4a after upgrading to Android 11, which is very annoying for me! Ghost touch with screen protector, which did NOT happen in Android 10. Please fix the bugs as soon as possible, thanks!

Same issue here.  Immediately after Android 11 update, the touchscreen became very sensitive.  Tried setting the Accessibility Touch & Hold to Medium and Long, but neither works.  Had to remove my screen protector to fix it.

I am experiencing the same problems as everyone else. Have noticed the problem gets worse when the phone heats up too. Removing the screen protector seems to alleviate most issues. Not something I want to exist long term with though.

I'm using a OMOTON Screen Protector and my 4a seems to be working fine after the upgrade to 11.
I'm using the three button not swipe and I have been able to open and or use every app installed.

I hate to be saying the same thing you guys are, but I'm having the same issues. To the T. I'm glad I got to experience the phone on Android 10 without this issue because I would have been livid to have the happen on a brand new phone. I'm sure it will be fixed, it's just a matter of time. I don't want to try to roll back to Android 10 and I don't want to remove my screen protector.
I went into the about phone and submitted feedback for the device to let them be aware of the issue. Try to submit the feedback there too if you guys can. I feel like if Google realizes there's a problem, they will most certainly try to fix it.

I talked to the Google support (Italy) and they told me that they're aware of the issue, as I'm yet to receive the device. They said that the issue is probably going to be solved by adding the "increase sensitivity" switch just like in the Pixel 4 and 4XL. It's probably just a matter of time. Hopefully it gets solved by October.

It's good to hear that support has an actual response to this issue now, Starsky10. Interesting that it does indeed seem connected to the sensitivity settings that were added to the Pixel 4 like I originally suggested.

It really is starting to seem like this will hopefully be resolved with an official update soon! If you haven't yet, I encourage anyone reading this to submit feedback through the Pixel 4a settings like Shelby suggested above. It certainly won't hurt.

I've just chatted again with the support, they said that before a launch in a different country, in this case Europe as a whole, they usually release an update to fix most of the bugs. Hopefully everything goes well!

After the Android 11 update my pixel 4a touch screen has been wildly over sensitive. Scrolling through Youtube or twitter or browser or anything else is a nightmare. Don't want to take off screen protector and scratch the screen on a brand new phone. I love this phone, but now it has turned into something of a nightmare. Please Google, let us know what's going on and help us out with this. It's intolerable.

Same as everyone else. Phone was great on Android 10, and now a nightmare on Android 11. Even typing this is difficult. Scrolling web pages literally clicks almost every link. I have a glass screen protector which I refuse to remove.

I'm also getting these phantom touches. At first I thought it was the screen protector that I was using and decided to remove it. I had a matte tempered glass screen protector, and I never used one like it before so I thought that was the culprit. After removing it, I used it for about a week before ordering and installing a new tempered glass screen protector only to find out the problem was still ongoing!

I've tried searching online for other people complaining about the same issue, but I couldn't find anything and thought it was a faulty phone until now! I'm kind of glad that others are having the same issue as I am after updating to Android 11. I've been reading some threads on Reddit about this issue as well, and it seems like people either have no problem at all, or the issue is making the phones unusable. I really hope they find a fix for it soon and push a new update, because these phantom touches are driving me up the wall!
