Keyboard pops up on return to home screen

Frequent when I return to my home screen the keyboard pops up. I use 3-button navigation and tap the center circle button to return home. Happens much more frequently when returning from a Google search window.  There is no text box to type in and I have to click the back button to remove it to continue using my phone. Recently factory reset the device and the problem continues...

I was a die hard 3 button guy too. But when switching to a Pixel I really disliked the minimize animations to home screen when tapping (multiple times) back.
So I tried gestures, also because I got used to it on my iPhones. After a week I was used to it and didn't want to go back. And I still don't.

Switching between apps is really simple if you've got the hang of it. Simply swipe from the bottom to halfway the screen and hold for a second.

Going back to home screen is swiping from the bottom, without holding.

Maybe give it a try anyway?

Normally I would suggest resetting either Gboard or the Pixel launcher but you already did a factory reset, the ultimate thing and still it persists.
I can't draw any other conclusion than that this has to be caused by some 3rd party app.

First try this: swipe up on your home screen and go to the app drawer, tap in the search bar and tap the three dots top right, tap preferences. Check whether the first option 'Swipe up to start searching... [Always show keyboard...]' is disabled.

If it was: have you already tried rebooting into SAFE MODE and check if it goes away.

To be complete: have you, by any chance, done anything special after the setup, e.g. enable developer options?

I have very same issue and behavior. On latest Beta release, latest Play Services, and latest Google App release.

I have exactly the same problem as you. Keyboard pops up when I press the home button on three button interface, most often when returning from a Google search window. Pixel 7XL.

I'm sure others have the issue too but since there are other groups with unrelated keyboard pop up problems, it took a while to find this page.

@Bsholar: glad you found us. Also for you the only workaround for now is trying to get used to gestures (I bet you're still on 3 button) and report the issue to the Google team, see above.
