There is no way other than reverting back to Android 11

I have the same issue. New shade wastes too much space, is much more prone to fat fingering / unintended taps especially with screen lock, and hides the brightness slider. All three are really bad features for me.

You might want to keep an eye out for third party apps that customize the shade (e.g., power shade). Sadly, for now, such apps don't work well with android 12. Maybe they'll get better as 12 becomes mainstream and more people get disgusted by this.

Today when I pull down the notifcation shade it has changed to show four smaller tiles, with just the icon visible. When you fully pull down the shade, then you see the full sized tiles.

This seems to have arrived overnight without me being aware of an update, so presumably a change Google has pushed to Pixel 6 phones.
It's a slight improvement, but the shade still covers the entire screen, even when there are no notifications from apps.

Also we still don't have separate wifi and mobile data tiles, which a lot of people would like back.

And this morning the four small tiles have gone and reverted back to showing four full sized tiles when I pull down the quick settings shade. So that didn't last long.

The small notification tiles in Android 11 were the perfect size. The massive notification tiles in Android 12 are way too big. Please allow us to alter the size of them. I haven't noticed any other benefits so I'll uninstall if possible and go back to Android 11 which had its own flaws but I either found a way around them or just got used to them. There may be unseen benefits like security updates but I'll give those up for a better user experience. The likelihood of anyone hacking my phone is slim.
