Contacts Don't Sync

I've been having trouble getting my Pixel 2 contacts to sync, for a few weeks now the 'Contact' item in the Account Sync Settings has the error message "Sync is currently experience problems. It will be back shortly." All other Google items (i.e. calendar, mail, etc) sync fine.

I posed this question before and it was moved to the GMail help topics but I don't believe it's a GMail problem, my previous android device never had this issue. Does anyone here have a suggestion?

Thanks

Can you try toggling the option for contact sync off and back on and see if that helps

I have tried that several times and when I toggle it back on it immediately tell me that sync is currently experiencing problems again. That message is only posted for contacts, all other aspects of account syncing appear to be normal.

Try clearing the app data/cache from the contacts app and see if that fixes it

I reset my Pixel XL and now my contacts will not all sync. Only 55 of 77 are showing. They're fine on the desktop site.

Are the missing 22 listed under my contacts or other contacts on the desktop

This is just great! I'm trying to contact someone who I haven't spoke to in over 1 year - and it's gone even though her number WAS in my phone. I cleared the cache, more people showed up but of course not hers. I really need to get ahold of her today!!
I guess I will be going back to an iPhone. Never had this problem there.
