Unlimited storage for original quality photos and videos!

Hi Folks,

I’m Ronald, a product manager on the Pixel team. We want to make sure our storage offering for photos and videos is super clear for Pixel customers. I’ve seen a few questions about how the unlimited storage feature works on Pixel for photos and videos, so I’m here to clarify a few things:

  • Unlimited original quality storage - all photos and videos uploaded from the Pixel phone are stored for free at original quality, whether it was taken by the camera, captured in a screenshot, or downloaded from another app. The storage used by these photos and videos will continue to be free even if you stop using the Pixel phone. Any photos and videos that are uploaded from other devices will count against the storage quota of the account if done at original quality and will be free at High Quality (which compresses photos).

  • Multiple accounts - you are able to upload photos and videos to only one account at a time. You can change accounts at any time. And if you ever decide to stop using your Pixel, those photos taken and uploaded from the Pixel will continue to be stored in your Google Account for free.

  • Smart Storage - If you use up all your storage in your Pixel, we have a smart storage feature that automatically removes local photos and videos that are older than a specific time (you can adjust the time frame in Settings > Storage > Manage storage). This will only be done for photos and videos that have been backed up.

Hope this helps! Happy uploading!

- Ronald

Thanks Ronald. That policy is generous in every aspect.

Hi Ronald,

Thanks so much for posting this. I was wondering if you could clarify a couple of other matters I've seen asked about:

1) If the images are copied from photos to drive (using the "show Google photos fold" option in drive), will the images take space in drive?

2) If photos/albums are shared with friends, and they choose the add to library option, will the photos use their storage? (Or automatically use whatever photo storage option they have set on their account)

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Hi Matthew,

I might be able to chip in here:

1) No, that option does not count towards storage - only photos explicitly uploaded to Drive would count.
2) Yes, adding to their library would incur their own quota use in line with their own storage option (High / Original quality)

Hi Ronald.

Thanks for this - very helpful.

I am particularly interested in the "or downloaded from another app" comment as that could be quite open ended. For example, I could download a large photo or video from the Chrome app or Drive / Gmail on the Pixel. Are you suggesting all of these routes would be quota-free? This would suggest it would be tricky to incur any quota charge from activity on the Pixel.

The good news is that this should be pretty easy to test via this link on desktop or on the Pixel > Google Drive mobile app > Filter by Images >Sort by Quota Used.

Hi Ronald, a question: if you switch Google accounts for the backup, do the photos already uploaded to the first Google account from the Pixel at Original Quality start to count against storage for that original Google account?

hi Peggy, if you decide to switch accounts, the photos already uploaded to the first Google account will continue to be backed up for free!

That's correct Mike. For example you could receive a photo or video via SMS and download that photo and upload it via Photos, it would be stored for free at original quality.

Ah that makes sense now, so yeah 6GB was from photos. And you know how to get to the graph that says what else is taking your storage right? (Drive and Gmail) if you click on buy more storage from either drive or photos it will bring you to a page with a chart on it. And that advice with viewing how much space each photo is taking up via drive never worked for me so I never recommend that. But I'm glad it all worked for you and you felt confident with hitting the scary button! 😂 Freaking Google, such a large company and yet has a list of ammature and non sense mistakes and bugs, all over.
