Unlock your Pixel phone with your face

How Face Unlock works

You can create a unique model of your face to unlock your Pixel phone with Face Unlock. Face Unlock is available on Pixel 4 and Pixel 7 or later Pixel phones, including Pixel Fold. To create this face model during setup, you'll take images of your face from different angles.

When you use Face Unlock, face images are used to update your face model so that, over time, your phone can recognize your face better in more scenarios. The face images used to create your face model aren't stored, but the face model is stored securely on your phone and never leaves the phone. All processing occurs securely on your phone.

When you enroll in Face Unlock, the face model is used only for Face Unlock and isn't shared with any other Google services or apps.

To delete your face model stored on the phone, follow the instructions below for your Pixel phone model.

Important:
  • Face models may be considered biometric data in some jurisdictions.
  • When you look at your phone, you can unlock it even when you don’t intend to.
  • Face Unlock may be less secure than a strong PIN, pattern or password.
  • Your phone can be unlocked by someone who looks a lot like you, like an identical sibling.
  • Your phone can also be unlocked by someone else if it’s held up to your face. Keep your phone in a safe place, like your front pocket or handbag. To prepare for unsafe situations, learn how to turn on lockdown.
  • When there isn’t sufficient light or when you have a face covering or sunglasses, Face Unlock might not work. We recommend you also enroll Fingerprint Unlock for a more seamless unlock experience.

  • Make sure that your're under sufficient light.

Sometimes for additional security, your phone won’t unlock with your face. You can still unlock your phone:
  • While your phone is locked, swipe up.
  • Enter your PIN, pattern, or password.
If your phone regularly has trouble with Face Unlock:
  • If you wear face covering, like a mask or dark sunglasses, take them off.
  • If you're in a dark environment, move to somewhere with sufficient lighting.
  • If you’re in bright, direct sunlight, move to the shade.
  • Hold your phone vertically, directly in front of your face, about 40 cm away.
  • Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the top of your screen.
  • If you change your appearance, delete your face data and set up Face Unlock again.
