Have driving mode turn on automatically on your Pixel phone

You can have your Pixel 3a or Pixel 3 turn on Do Not Disturb or Android Auto when you're driving. On your Pixel 2, you can have Do Not Disturb turn on when you're driving.

For the best phone experience while driving:

  • To avoid distractions from your phone, set up Do Not Disturb.
  • If you need to see or touch your Pixel 3 while driving, use driving mode with Android Auto.
  • If your car has Android Auto built in, use your car's display, not driving mode. Learn about Android Auto.

Pixel 3a or Pixel 3: Set up driving mode

If you're pairing your phone with your car for the first time, learn how to connect via Bluetooth or fix car pairing.

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Connected devices and then Connection preferences and then Driving mode.
  3. Tap Behavior.
  4. Tap Turn on automatically.
    • Pixel 3a & Pixel 3: If you connect to your car via Bluetooth, tap When connected to Bluetooth. Then pick your car.
    • Pixel 3 only: If your car doesn't work with Bluetooth, tap When driving is detected.

Tip: To get the most from driving mode, set it for Do Not Disturb in any car, or for Android Auto in a car without Android Auto built in. If your car has Android Auto built in, use your car's display instead of driving mode.

Pixel 2: Set up a driving rule

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Sound and then Do Not DisturbLearn about Do Not Disturb.
  3. Tap Turn on automatically.
  4. Tap Add rule and then Driving.
  5. At the top, check that your rule is turned on.

To delete the rule, tap Delete Delete.

Note: You can set up a driving rule on Pixel 3, but we recommend driving mode instead.

When driving mode turns on or off

Your phone starts driving mode within a minute of when:

  • It connects to a car
  • It thinks it's in a moving car

Your phone stops driving mode after about:

  • 30 seconds of walking
  • 10 minutes of not moving
