You can move what's on your current phone to your new Pixel phone, or set up your Pixel phone as a new device.
- You can automatically transfer data from most phones using Android 5.0 and up or iOS 8.0 and up. (Learn how to check your Android or iOS version, and what can limit iPhone copying.)
- You can manually transfer data from most phones using most systems.
Gather what you need
Important: Before you begin to set up your new phone, back up your old device. If you use third-party apps like WhatsApp, back up data such as chat history within the app.
Before you start the setup process, make sure that you have:
- Your previous device
- Both your phones fully charged
- A strong Wi-Fi connection
- A USB-C cable, if you don't have a strong Wi-Fi connection
- A SIM card tool, unless you use an eSIM
- Tip: Pixel 10 and later phones in the US don't have a physical SIM slot.
- Your screen lock PIN from your previous device
Walk through the setup process
When you set up your new Pixel phone, follow the on-screen instructions. You'll be taken through:
- SIM or eSIM setup
- Data transfer from your previous device
- Introduction to a selection of Pixel feature highlights
- Ways to personalise your device
Transfer data from your current phone
To move data to your new phone, follow the on-screen steps the first time that you turn it on. If you want to transfer data from:
- Android phone: Follow our Android transfer guide.

- Don’t have your old device: Learn how to restore data if you have a cloud backup.
If you skip data transfer or don't finish setup the first time:
On a Pixel 9 or later, you can transfer data at any time with Android Switch. You can also find a 'Finish setting up your Pixel' notification. Follow the on-screen setup. Learn more about how to transfer data after set up.
If you're on an earlier device:
- Within a few minutes, you'll get a 'Pixel setup isn't done' notification. Tap Finish setup.
- If you didn't finish setup, and it's only been a few days, open your Settings app to complete the process. At the top, tap Finish setup.
- After a while, you can always reset your phone but that erases all your data. Find out how to reset to factory settings.
Tips:
- Even if you set up a new device without doing data transfer, you still need to log in to your Google Account to download apps, use some features or transfer data at a later time.
