Receive & reply to messages sent from apps you don't have

You can choose to get messages that are sent to you from messaging apps that you don't have. You get these messages as notifications. You can reply from the notifications.

Note: Some of these steps work only on Android 8.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Turn on app preview messages

  1. Open your device’s Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap Google and then App preview messages.
  3. Turn on App preview messages.
  4. Enter your phone number. Tap Verify.
  5. You'll get a text message with a PIN. If needed, enter that PIN.

Turn off app preview messages

  1. Open your device’s Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap Google and then App preview messages.
    • To turn off all apps, turn off App preview messages.
    • To turn off one app, under "Connected apps," turn off the app.

Reply to app preview messages

  1. Tap the notification and then Reply.
  2. Enter your reply. Tap Send Send.

To get the app, tap Install.

Block app preview messages

  1. Tap the notification and then Block.
  2. Pick Block this person, Block & report as spam, or Turn off App preview notifications for [app].

Keep or delete app preview messages

Keep messages
By default, app preview messages stay on your phone for 1 year.
If you install the app that sent a message:
  • The app preview message chats that you've had with that app in the past 24 hours move to that app.
  • Those messages are no longer app preview messages.
  • You can manage those messages in your new app.
Delete all messages
  1. Open your device’s Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap Google and then​ App preview messagesand then Manage Storage.
  3. Tap Delete all App preview messages.
Automatically remove messages after 7 days
  1. Open your device’s Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap Google and then​ App preview messagesand then Manage Storage.
  3. Turn on Remove messages after 7 days.
