Set or clear default apps

If you have more than one app that does the same thing, you can pick which app to use by default. For example, if you have multiple photo editing apps, you can choose which one to use to open a photo.

Important: Some of these steps work only on Android 9.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

You can pick which apps to open by default

Pick when asked
  1. If your phone or tablet asks which app to use, tap the app you want.
  2. To choose how often you want to use the app for this action, tap Always or Just once.
    • If you choose Always: Your device won't ask which app to use anymore.
    • If you choose Just once: Your device uses the app just once.
  3. To have your device ask again, you can clear the default apps. Learn how to clear defaults.
Pick at any time
  1. Open your device's Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps and then Default apps.
  3. Tap the default that you want to change.
  4. Tap the app that you want to use by default.

Clear default apps in your settings

  1. Open your device's Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap the app that you no longer want to be the default.
    • If you don't find it, tap See all apps.
  4. Tap Open by default.
  5. Turn off Open supported links.

After the default is cleared, when you take that action again, your device will ask you which app to use.
