Change call settings

You can change your phone’s call ringtone, vibration settings, quick responses, and call history display.

Important: Some of these steps work only on Android 7.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Change sound & vibration settings

  1. Open the Phone app .
  2. Tap More  And then Settings.
  3. Tap Sounds and vibration.
    • To pick from available ringtones, tap Phone ringtone.
    • To make your phone vibrate when you get a call, tap Also vibrate for calls.
    • To hear sounds when you tap the dialpad, tap Dial pad tones. (If you don't see "Dial pad tones," tap Keypad tones.)

Change how callers’ names are formatted and listed

Important: You can't change caller names in all languages.

  1. Open the Phone app .
  2. Tap More  And then Settings.
  3. Tap Display options.
    • To pick how your phone sorts calls in your history, tap Sort by.
    • To pick how your phone shows contact names in your history, tap Name format.

Change text responses

When you can’t pick up a call, you can send an automatic text message instead. Here’s how to change your automatic text messages:

  1. Open the Phone app .
  2. Tap More  And then Settings.
  3. Tap Quick responses.
  4. Tap a response from the list.
  5. Edit the response.
  6. Tap Ok.

Change more settings

Change the number of rings before going to voicemail
Many phone carriers offer the ability to change the ring duration or number of rings before incoming calls go to voicemail. To change this setting, consult your phone carrier.

Use TTY or RTT with calls

To add text support to your phone calls:

  1. Open the Phone app .
  2. Tap More  and then Settings.
  3. Tap Accessibility.
  4. To access your Real-time text (RTT) settings, tap Real-time text (RTT)
    • To allow incoming RTT calls but hide the calling button, tap Not visible. 
    • To show the RTT button during a call, tap Visible during call. 
    • To always show the RTT button, tap Always visible.

If your phone doesn’t support RTT, you can use Text Telephone (TTY) mode. To turn on Text Telephone mode, tap TTY mode and choose one of the following:

  • To hear and speak on the phone with no text support, tap TTY Off.
  • To use typed text in both directions, tap TTY Full.
  • To type text and hear the other person reply aloud, tap TTY HCO.
  • To speak aloud and read the other person's reply as text, tap TTY VCO.

Tip: If you're not sure whether you can use TTY or RTT with your phone and service plan, check with your carrier.

Turn off nearby places search

To search nearby places inside the Phone app, give the Phone app permission to use your location.

  1. Open the Phone app .
  2. Tap More  And then Settings And then Nearby places.
  3. At the top of the screen, tap Nearby places.

Tip: Under "Google Account," if you see Location permission is denied, tap it.

Get help making calls when you travel

Change your home country

Your Phone app will automatically set your home country based on your phone number. To change your home country:

  1. Open the Phone app .
  2. Tap More  And then Settings And then Calls And then Assisted dialing.
  3. Tap Default home country.
  4. Choose a country.
  5. Tap Save.

Stop automatically adding country codes

  1. Open the Phone app .
  2. Tap More  And then Settings And then Calls And then Assisted dialing.
  3. Turn off Assisted dialing.
Turn Clear Calling on or off

Important: This feature is available on Pixel 7 and later, including Fold.

Important: This feature depends on your call bandwidth and may not be available for all calls.

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration and then Clear Calling.
  3. Turn Use Clear Calling on or off.
