Important: For trade-ins, use the factory reset option in the Settings app.
If you can't reset in the Settings app or you can't use your screen, you can reset your Pixel device with your phone's buttons.
Turn on Fastboot mode
- Turn off your phone. Learn how to turn your Pixel phone on and off.
- For Pixel 6 and later: Press and hold the volume down and power buttons at the same time for up to 30 seconds until the Fastboot mode screen shows. If you hold the buttons for too long, the phone restarts. If this happens, try again from step 1.
- Earlier devices: Press and hold the volume up and power buttons at the same time for up to 30 seconds until the Fastboot mode screen shows.
Tip: Fastboot mode can still reset your phone even if the display doesn't work.
Factory reset your Pixel phone from Fastboot mode
After your phone enters Fastboot mode, you can factory reset your device even if you can't access the Settings menu.
- Select Recovery mode.
- To change the menu options, press the volume up or volume down buttons until 'Recovery mode' is displayed.
- To select the option, press the power button.
- When the screen shows 'No command', press and hold the power button.
- While you hold the power button, press the volume up button and let go of both buttons quickly.
- Under 'Android recovery', select Wipe data/factory reset.
- To scroll down, press the volume down button.
- To select the option, press the power button.
- Select Factory data reset.
- Once the factory reset is complete, your screen shows 'Data wipe complete'.
- Select Reboot system now.
- To set up your Pixel phone after the OS installation, tap Start.
