Use Live Translate for phone calls

You can translate your voice into selected languages and mimic your natural voice and tone in real time with Live Translate. You can use it for situations like making restaurant reservations while travelling abroad or communicating with business partners.

Important:

• This feature is available on Pixel 10 and later, including Fold.
• This feature is named 'Voice Translate' on the Pixel 10 series.

You can translate between English and the following languages:

• French
• German
• Hindi
• Indonesian (not available on Pixel 10a)
• Italian
• Japanese (not available on Pixel 10a)
• Portuguese
• Russian (not available on Pixel 10a)
• Spanish
• Swedish (not available on Pixel 10a)

Learn about Live Translate for phone calls

This feature:

• Allows you to have a real-time conversation with someone who speaks a different language.
• Helps the speaker feel connected by hearing a voice in their likeness.
• Works without an Internet connection and protects your privacy.

Protects your privacy and ensures that you're always in control of your data:

• No conversation audio or transcription is stored on the device.
• Conversations aren't sent to Google servers or anywhere else, or retrievable after the call.

Is off by default, but you can:

• Activate it for future calls.
• Turn it off for all calls at any time.
• Turn it off during a particular call.

Turn on Live Translate

Important: As you follow the steps, you may need to download models for the feature to work.

On Pixel 11 and later:

1. Open your phone's Settings app.
2. Tap System Live Translate.
3. Turn on Use Live Translate.
4. To choose what's translated, turn Text, Phone calls or Media on or off.
5. To add a language for Live Translate:
   1. Tap Add a language.
   2. Select a language to add.
   3. Tap Add language.

Tip: You can add Live Translate to your Quick Settings menu.

On Pixel 10 series phones:

1. Make sure that all your apps are up to date. Learn how to update your apps.
2. Open the Phone app.
3. At the top left, tap More Settings Voice translate.
4. Turn on Use voice translate.
5. In the drop-down menu, select the language that you speak.
   • To download additional languages that you'd like to use, tap your chosen languages.

How to use Live Translate for phone calls

1. Start a call.
2. Tap Call Assist.
3. To turn on live translation, tap Live Translate.
   • On Pixel 10, this will appear as Voice translate.
4. Select the language that the other party uses.
5. Tap Done.

Tips:

• You can select your language and the speaker’s language.
• Both you and the other party will each hear a brief announcement in your own language. Once it's complete, feel free to begin talking.
• If a different language is detected during a call, a notification automatically appears. It'll ask if you want to switch languages.
  • You can dismiss the notification or accept the language switch.
