Important: To ensure that you can validate your identity, keep your physical ID card on you as needed. A digital ID in Google Wallet is not a replacement for your physical ID.
Requirements to add and use a US driving licence or state ID
- You need a phone with Android 9 or higher.
- To use this feature, you must turn on Bluetooth and Nearby devices.
- To use this feature for added security, you must set a screen lock.
- This feature is only available for US driving licences and state IDs in the following states:

Important: To protect your privacy and security, your card must be verified with the government agency that issued it.
- Open the Google Wallet app

- Tap Add to Wallet
ID card.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Take photos of the front and back of your ID or licence, as well as a short video of yourself. A photo from this video will be submitted to your ID issuer for verification.
Tip: If you aren't able to add your ID:
- Keep the card steady or place it on a flat surface.
- Ensure that you scan it in a well-lit location and place your card on top of a dark background.
- Make sure that the barcode is clearly visible. Zoom in on the barcode if needed.
- Make sure that your Google Wallet app is up to date.
- Restart your phone after the update. Learn how to update apps on Android.
Use your ID or licence
To verify your identity, you can use your US driving licence or state ID in Google Wallet instead of your physical card. A digital ID is a valid document with the same restrictions as your physical identification card or driving licence.
Currently, you can use your US driving licence or state ID with:
- The TSA at supported airports. Your digital ID must be REAL ID compliant and you must still carry your physical ID as needed.
- Some apps, like car hire services, accept a digital driving licence or state ID in Google Wallet for identity and age verification.

TSA
Important: You can use your US driving licence or state ID with the TSA at supported airports. You must still carry your physical ID as needed. If you add a digital driving licence or state ID to your Google Wallet that is not a REAL ID, your digital ID will not be accepted at TSA checkpoints for domestic travel. To confirm whether it is supported by the TSA, refer to TSA guidance on what types of digital IDs are compliant or contact your state issuer directly.
- Unlock your phone.
- Hold the back of your phone close to the NFC terminal for a few seconds.
- Review the info that will be shared.
- Tap Continue if you want to proceed or tap Cancel if you don't want to share the info with the TSA.
- Before you can proceed, Google Wallet will also ask you to authenticate.
- To confirm that the info was shared, wait for the blue tick.
Tip: If you aren't able to share your ID:
- Try holding your phone in a different way. Your NFC antenna could be near the top or bottom of your device.
- Hold your phone closer to the reader.
- For a few extra seconds, hold your phone to the reader.
If you still have issues, use your physical ID
- Open the Google Wallet app
.
- Scroll to find your ID or licence.
- Tap your ID or licence.
- Allow the TSA agent to scan the QR code on your ID.
- Review the info that will be shared.
- Tap Share if you want to proceed or tap Cancel if you don't want to share the info.
- Before you can proceed, Google Wallet will also ask you to authenticate.
- To confirm that the info was shared, wait for the blue tick.
Tip: If the back of your licence won't scan, try to:
- Keep the card steady or place it on a flat surface.
- Scan the card in a well-lit location.
- Make sure that the QR code is clearly visible. Zoom in on the QR code if needed.
Other apps
Some apps, like car hire services, accept a digital driving licence or state ID in Google Wallet for identity and age verification.
If the app accepts digital IDs through Google Wallet, you'll be asked if you want to use your digital ID in Google Wallet during the app's verification process. You can review the info that will be shared with the app and agree before your info is shared. Before you can proceed, Google Wallet will also ask you to authenticate.
Tip: To use your digital ID or licence with other apps, follow the steps in your connected app as they vary from app to app.
Manage your ID or licence
Important: Your ID or licence is encrypted and saved on your device in Google Wallet. Because the ID or licence is saved locally on your device and not in your Google Account and is also sensitive data, you cannot use Google's Takeout feature to export and download a copy of your ID or licence contents.
View your ID or licence
You can view your ID or licence with the Google Wallet app.
- On your Android device, open the Google Wallet app

- Scroll to find your ID or licence.
- Tap your ID or licence.

Turn on or off activity history for your ID or licence
Activity history is turned off by default. You can turn on activity history to see information about who the ID or licence was shared with, the ID or licence info shared and when the ID or licence was shared. The activity history is stored on the device of your ID or licence and only you can see the activity history after you verify that it's you. If you turn off activity history after turning it on, all activity on the device will be deleted.
- On your Android device, open the Google Wallet app

- Scroll to find your ID or licence.
- Tap your ID or licence.
- At the top right, tap More
View and manage activity
- Turn on activity history.
Tip: If activity history is turned on, to view your activity history on your ID or licence, tap More
View and manage activity.
Export your activity log data
- Open the Google Wallet app.
- Scroll to find your 'ID or licence'.
- Tap your ID or licence.
- Tap More
View and manage activity.
- Verify that it's you.
- At the top right, tap Download

Remove your ID or licence
Important: Your US driving licence or state ID is saved locally on your device. You can only save your US driving licence or state ID to a single device.
You can remove your ID or licence from your Google Wallet if:
- You want to add your licence or ID to a new phone.
- You want to give away or sell your phone.
- You need to send your phone away for repair.
- Your phone is lost or stolen.
You can remove your US driving licence or state ID with either the Google Wallet app or online at myaccount.google.com.
To remove your ID with the Google Wallet app:
- Open the Google Wallet app

- Scroll to find your 'ID or licence'.
- Tap your ID or licence.
- At the top right, tap More

To remove your ID online remotely:
- Go to myaccount.google.com.
- Tap Security and sign-in.
- Scroll to 'IDs'.
- Tap Manage IDs.
- Select the ID or licence that you want to remove.
- Next to the ID or licence, tap Delete

- Confirm that you want to delete your ID or licence from your device and Google Account.
Fix problems with your ID or licence
ID rejected by ID issuerIf the ID issuer rejects your ID in the application process, please review the product instructions and help tips for adding an ID and try again. If you continue to face issues and for more info, go to your state's ID issuer website.
Your ID issuer has the right to delete your ID at any time and at their discretion. Go to your state's Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration website for more info on why it was deleted.
To process your US driving licence or state ID application, the app may notify you that your ID issuer requires more info. In these cases, you must follow the instructions in the app for more verification.
To keep your US driving licence or state ID up to date, your device must connect to the Internet. If you're offline for more than 30 consecutive days, your US driving licence or state ID won't be available until your device reconnects to the Internet.
If you move to a place where this feature is supported, repeat the process to create a new US driving licence or state ID based on your new licence. If you move to a place where this feature isn't supported, your US driving licence or state ID won't work once your physical ID is no longer valid.
If you lose your phone, you must follow the instructions above to remove your ID.
Privacy for US driving licence or state ID
When you apply for a digital ID in Google Wallet on your phone, you provide us with certain info, such as photos of the front and back of your ID and a brief video of your face.
With your consent, we share your ID info and an image of your face from the video with the government agency that issued your ID as part of your request for a digital ID.
We will only send your request to the government agency with your consent.
That agency will review your info. If your submission is approved, your encrypted US driving licence or state ID will be saved on your device. You may view and manage it on your device, as well as control when your ID is shared. Also, we record the fact that you consented.

Any data used by Google, including data used for analytics purposes, will be used in accordance with Google's Privacy Policy.
