Translate speech & text on your Pixel phone or Pixel Tablet

This article summarizes multiple translation features available on your device.

Learn about Live Translate

Important: This feature is available on Pixel 6 and later.

You can detect and translate other languages on your phone with Live Translate.

• Text and Apps: Translate messages, on-screen text, and on-screen content. Translations for text and apps are available on Pixel 6 and later.
• Phone calls: Communicate in real-time with live voice translation. Translations for phone calls are available on Pixel 10 and later.
• Media: Get translated audio for videos, podcasts, and social media. Translations for media are available on Pixel 11 and later.

Turn on Live Translate

1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
2. Tap System Live Translate.
3. Turn on Use Live Translate.
4. To choose what’s translated, turn Text, Phone Calls, or Media on or off.
   • This setting is available for Pixel 11 series phones.
5. To add a language for Live Translate:
   1. Tap Add a language.
   2. Select a language to add.
   3. Tap Add language.

Tip: You can add Live Translate to your Quick Settings menu.

Use Live Translate for phone calls

Important:

• This feature is available on Pixel 10 and later.
• You can find this feature as “Voice Translate" on Pixel 10 series phones and as “Live Translate” on Pixel 11 series phones.

You can translate your voice into a selected language with Live Translate, and mimic your natural voice and tone in real-time.

To use Live Translate for calls:

1. Start a call.
2. Tap Call Assist.
3. To turn on live translation, tap Live translate.
4. Select the language the other party uses.
   • You can select your language and the speaker’s language
5. Tap Done.
   • You and the other party will each hear a brief announcement in your own language. Once it's complete, feel free to begin talking.

Tips:

• Live Translate can automatically detect when a spoken language has changed and prompt you to use the new language.
• Live Translate for phone calls is only available in certain countries and languages, and requires compatible apps. Translation accuracy may vary, so always double-check important information. Learn how to use Live Translate for phone calls.

Use Live Translate for text messages

When you turn on Live Translate, you can translate text messages on some chat apps. All translations take place on your device. This feature is also available for Pixel Tablet.

To switch between the original and your chosen language, tap the language bubble.

To update language preferences:

1. Open a text conversation that’s in another language.
2. Tap the translate chip.
3. In the Drop-down , update the translation languages.

To translate a single message:

1. Open a text message that’s in another language.
2. Touch and hold to select text.
3. Tap Copy .
4. Tap Translate copied text.

Tip: To translate the full page, tap the Drop-down menu Translate full page.

Use Live Translate for media

Important:

• This feature is available on Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
• This feature is available for certain apps, such as YouTube and select third-party apps.

You can translate audio and video from select apps in real time with Live Translate for media. It allows you to listen to media in your chosen language by translating the audio on your device.

To use Live Translate for media:

1. Play media.
2. At the top of the screen, tap the on-screen button that appears.
3. To translate your media, select the language you want to translate into.

Tip: This feature works best with a clear primary speaker and low background noise. It doesn’t translate music.

Other translation features

Translate text with your camera

You can translate text using your camera.

1. On your Pixel search bar, tap Lens .
2. Take a photo of the text you want to translate.

Translate as you scroll with Circle to Search

You can translate webpages and apps as you scroll. Learn how to use Circle to Search on your Pixel phone or tablet.

To translate as you scroll down a page or switch apps:

1. Touch and hold the Home button or navigation bar at the bottom of the screen.
2. Tap Translate Scroll and translate .

Translation works for most content types like webpages, messages, and social media, but not videos and GIFs.

Translate captions on media

You can switch caption languages on media like videos, podcasts, phone calls, video calls, and audio messages. Learn more about Live Caption.

Use Google Translate with Dual Screen support (Pixel Fold (1st Gen) and later)

You can use Google Translate for a more natural way to translate, which makes face-to-face conversations in different languages even easier. With Dual Screen support, translations appear on the inside and outside screens.

Important: To make sure that the translation is correct when you use Dual Screen, make sure you don't cover the microphone.

To use Dual Screen in Google Translate:

1. Open your Google Translate app .
2. Unfold your phone.
3. Click Conversation.
4. Tap Face to face .
5. Tap Dual Screen .
6. Start speaking and the translation will appear on the outer screen.
