Use Magic Editor to reimagine your photos

You can use Magic Editor to reimagine your photos on your Pixel device. You can move, recompose, or erase parts of your photos and apply contextual or special effect presets, like “Sky” or “Golden hour.”

Important:

  • Your device must have a 64-bit chipset with at least 4 GB RAM and Android 8.0 and up.
  • This feature is experimental and couldn't always work how you expect.

Edit a photo with Magic Editor

Use Magic Editor:

  1. On your Pixel device, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Tap the photo you want to edit.
  3. Tap Edit .
  4. At the bottom left, tap Magic Editor Magic Editor.
Apply preset effects in Magic Editor:
  1. When you’re in Magic Editor mode, tap Preset Edit Fix Auto.
  2. Select a preset.
  3. To scroll through your options, swipe left.
  4. Tap the Checkmark Done.
  5. If you want to continue to edit your photo, repeat steps 1-3.
  6. When you’re finished with your edit, tap Save copy.

Tips:

  • Preset options depend on your photo. Not all options are available at the same time.
  • Presets may include Water, Sky, Auto frame, Portrait, and more.
Use Auto frame to recompose your photo
If a photo is too cropped in or not properly framed, use the Auto frame preset to recompose or extend the background of your photo.
Use Portrait to spotlight your subject
To automatically remove distractions, blur your background, and add portrait lighting, use the Portrait preset.

Use Magic Editor to edit a part of your photo:

Important:

  • It can take a moment for Magic Editor to generate photo options.
  • To view or compare the original version from your edited photo, tap and hold screen.

After you select part of your photo, you can move, resize, erase or reimagine your selection.

Edit your photos with Magic Editor on your Pixel phone

Select part of your photo
  1. When you’re in Magic Editor mode, tap, draw a circle around, or brush to select a part of your photo.
  2. Zoom in for better accuracy.
  3. To add or subtract objects from your current selection, tap Refine selection.
    • To select more objects, keep Add selected.
    • To select less objects, tap Subtract.
  4. To apply the edit, tap the Checkmark Done.
  5. When you’re finished with your edit, tap Save copy.
Move a part of your photo
To move your selection, touch and hold, then drag it to the area you want.
Resize a part of your photo
To change the size of your selection, touch and hold, and pinch it with 2 fingers.
Erase a part of your photo
To remove your selection, tap Erase.
Reimagine a part of your photo
Important:

To use Reimagine, you must:

  • Use English prompts.
  • Be at least 18 years old and on Pixel 9 and later, including Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet.

You can change the appearance, material, or texture of your selection.

  1. At the bottom, tap Reimagine.
  2. In the corresponding text field, enter a prompt to change the content or the elements of your selection.
    • For best results, be specific and descriptive. For example, start with a simple phrase like “field of yellow flowers” or “fall leaves”.
  1. Swipe to check other options.
  2. When you find the one you like, tap the Checkmark Done.

Tips:

  • Use only nouns and adjectives for better results.
  • To change the background, select the background and make sure that the subjects aren’t included.
  • For edits like brightening and contrast, use the regular editor.
  • To erase, use Erase instead of Reimagine.
