Work on Google Drive files offline on your Pixelbook

When using Google Drive with your Pixelbook, some of your recently used Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides may be automatically saved to your device, so that you can continue working on them without an internet connection.

Note: To enable the offline use of Google Calendar and Gmail, as well, see this article.

Working on a Google Drive file offline

When your device isn't connected to the Internet:

  1. From your Chrome browser, open Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides.
  2. Find the file you'd like to work on, and double-click or tap it to open. (If the file is grayed-out, it's not available offline.)
  3. Work on your file. Any changes will sync to Google Drive the next time your device connects to the internet.

Make specific files available offline

When you use Google Drive offline, only your most recent files will be automatically saved offline. To manually choose files to save for offline use:

  1. From your Chrome browser, open Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides.
  2. On the file that you want to use offline, right-click or long-press.
  3. Select Available offline.
  4. Once the file is available offline, you'll see a tick next to the file name.

Using other files offline

To see other file types that are saved to your device, such as a JPEG or PDF that you downloaded from the internet:

  1. In laptop mode: In the corner of your screen, select the Launcher Launcher and then Up arrow Up arrow.
In tablet mode: Go to your Home screen. To get there, tap the Launcher Launcher in the corner of your screen.
  2. Select Files Files.
  3. On the left, select Google Drive and then Offline.

Stop seeing files offline

To free up hard drive space, you can delete the offline versions of your files:

  1. Go to drive.google.com/drive/settings.
  2. In the "Offline" area, uncheck the box.

You'll still see your files in Google Drive when you're connected to the internet.
