Sign your child in on their Pixelbook

If you'd like to supervise what your child does on the internet while using their Pixelbook, use Family Link to create a Google Account for your child. With the Family Link app, you can choose what websites your child can access with Chrome, supervise your child's app usage, and more.

System requirements

Family Link can be used with devices on Chrome OS versions 71 or higher. To learn how to update your device's operating system, refer to Related articles.

How your device works with your child's Google Account

Children signed in to their Google Account on a Chrome OS device have a similar experience to adults. Available features may be updated from time to time, but some of the differences include:

  • Children don't have access to apps and extensions from the Chrome Web Store.
  • Children can't use incognito mode.
  • Parents can manage the websites their children can visit on Chrome, and limit their children's ability to grant permissions to websites.
  • If "try to block mature sites" is on for your child in Family Link, the Chrome browser blocks most sexually explicit and violent sites.
  • Chrome Sync is required for certain parental management features to work with your child's Google Account. However, your child can turn off certain kinds of data collection.
  • Your child's Google Activity controls may allow Google to use Chrome browser history and activity from websites to personalize your child's experience across Google products and services. This information won't be used to personalize ads for children under 13 (or the applicable age in your country).

Add your child's Google Account

To a new or factory reset device
  1. Set up the device and sign in with your Google account.
  2. Add your child's Google Account to the device.

Note: After your child is signed in to their device, a parent's password is required to add new users.

A device that's already set up
  1. Add your child's Google Account to the device.
    Note: If you add supervision to your child's existing Google Account, you need to restart the device to finish adding supervision and regain access to some Google services.
  2. Recommended: If you (the parent) are the owner device's owner account, disable guest mode and control who can sign in to your child's device. If guest mode and adding new users are allowed, your child can use the device without Family Link settings applying.

Manage your child's activity

Choose what apps your child can use

You can choose what apps your child can use on their device and what permissions your child provides to those apps.

Manage your child's browsing on Chrome
  1. Open the Family Link app Family Link
  2. Select your child.
  3. Tap Controls and then Content restrictions and then Google Chrome.
  4. Choose the setting that's right for your family:
    • Allow all sites: Your child can visit all sites, except the ones you block.
    • Try to block mature sites: No filter is perfect, but this setting helps hide sexually explicit and violent sites.
    • Only allow certain sites: Your child can only be able to visit the sites you allow.
  5. Under "Manage sites", tap Approved or Blocked to manually allow or block a site. When you manually allow or block a site, this setting automatically applies over the other Chrome browsing settings enabled for your child.

Note: You can also click your child's name at g.co/yourfamily to manage this setting.

Block or allow certain sites

If you block a certain site, your child can ask for parental permission to visit it. You should get a notification in the Family Link app where you can approve or deny their request.

  • Websites: If you block or allow a specific website, like www.google.com, the permission won't apply to sites that begin or end differently, like www.google.co.uk or get.google.com/tips.
  • Domains: If you block or allow an entire domain, like google, the permission applies to sites that begin or end differently too, like google.com, and images.google.fr.

Block or allow a site

  1. Open the Family Link app Family Link
  2. Select your child.
  3.  Tap Controls and then Content restrictions and then Google Chrome.
  4. Under "Manage sites", tap Approved or Blocked.
  5. Tap Add a website.
  6. Add a website like www.google.com or a domain like google. If you add a website, indicate the www. portion of the URL, like www.google.com instead of google.com
  7. At the top left, tap Close Close

Note: You can also click your child's name at g.co/yourfamily to manage this setting.

Change website permission settings

You can decide whether your child can give site permissions to websites they visit, such as permission to use location, camera, and notifications.

  1. Open the Family Link app Family Link
  2. Select your child.
  3.  Tap Controls and then Content restrictions and then Google Chrome and then Advanced settings.
  4. Turn "Permissions for sites, apps, and extension" on or off.

Note: You can also click your child's name on the Chrome dashboard to manage this setting.

When "Permissions for sites, apps, and extension" is off, children can't grant permissions to websites. However, permissions they have already granted will still be in place.

Find or delete your child's Chrome history

Find Chrome history
  1. On your child's device, open Chrome Chrome
  2. At the top right, select More More and then History. This page shows your child's recent Chrome history.
Clear Chrome history and data

Browsing history

  1. Open the Family Link app Family Link
  2. Select your child.
  3.  Tap Controls and then Content restrictions and then Google Chrome and then Advanced settings.
  4. In the "History" section, select Clear history.

Note: Your child's Google Account might have other kinds of browsing history saved at myactivity.google.com.

Browsing data

You can clear your child's browsing data, like cookies, saved passwords, and autofill form data.

If you sync a type of data, deleting it on your computer will delete it everywhere it's synced. It'll be removed from other devices and your Google Account.

  1. On your child's device, open Chrome Chrome
  2. At the top right, select More More and then History.
  3. On the left, click Clear browsing data.
    • Choose a time range, like last hour or all time.
    • Select the types of information you want to remove.
  4. Select Clear data.
