Why do my pictures disappear from the folder list?

I have thousands of photos stored on my hard disk. I use Picasa as my primary photo program. I have Picasa set to scan my “My Pictures” folder which is where I store the photos. I uploaded some new photos to Picasa and after it indexed all of the new pictures all of the pictured vanished from Picasa, they are however still in their regionally indexed place on my hard drive. I then went in and selected every folder individually and had Picasa scan them which came up with the same result, pictures vanishing from the index. This happened with the older version of Picasa as well. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it with still no success.

Any ideas?

You don't say what size the photos are , but if are small make sure that in Picasa you have View -> Small Pictures ticked.

I was reading other similar issues and they mentioned hidden folders. I made all of my folders visible and still had the issue.

Be sure you understand that the hidden folder problem is with folders hidden in Windows, not Picasa.  Also try to unhide the AppData or the Local Settings folder in the path to your google folder depending on you OS.  A few user have reported that that cured their symptoms.

Vista: C:\Users\<myaccount>\AppData\Local\Google
     XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<myaccount>Local Settings\application data\google

I am having problems with Picasa 3 and had it with the older version, as well. Not only do all albums disappear and Picasa ends up empty when I open it, it crops my photos and warps them, shifts them around all over the folder after I have them arranged in order, and it takes the captions and throws them around all over Picasa into other folders. It did it in the older version and now it is doing it in this one. If you don't save the photo in a folder outside of Picasa and name that photo, you will lose that photo and the name associated with it. Right now I have a folder with about a dozen old photos in it. I cannot find the rest of them, and there were about 75. I have no idea what happened to them I can't even find them in My Documents. Picasa is one of the best programs and worst programs I have ever used. It is great, and then it does mess like this What good is it?

We don't get many complaints about Picasa3 actually harming the photos on your computer, usually it just can't display them properly.  Are you certain it is doing this?  Are you looking with Windows Explorer?

With Picasa 3 I have spent hours putting faces into the right folders only to have my grandaughters folder of over 150 pictures disappear. It is not in my people folders any more! ARGH
