Set default importing program

When importing photos and videos, you can set your import preferences to use Picasa automatically. Depending on your operating system, please use the steps below:

Windows XP

Windows XP

In Windows XP, your default import setting must be adjusted on a device by device basis:

  1. Connect the import device (your camera or card reader) to your computer.
  2. Double-click My Computer on your computer desktop.
  3. Right-click the listing of your import device.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Click the Autoplay tab.
  6. Select 'Pictures' from the content drop-down menu.
  7. Choose from two possible actions:
    • Select an action to perform: Select an application to handle import by default each time photos are detected on the specific piece of hardware.
    • Prompt me each time to choose an action: Choose an import application each time you attach your hardware.
  8. Click Apply.
  9. Click OK.

Windows Vista

Windows Vista

Windows Vista allows you to set a global import preference for all photo or videos files.

  1. Click Start > Control Panel.
  2. Select Autoplay.
  3. Under 'Picture' or 'Video,' select your default import program.
  4. Click Save.


On a Mac, you can either set the global default import program through Picasa or Image Capture:


  1. In Picasa, click Picasa > Preferences.
  2. Select the General tab.
  3. Select your default import program from the 'When a camera is connected, launch:' drop-down box.
  4. Click OK.

Image Capture

  1. Open Finder and then choose Applications.
  2. Double-click the Image Capture icon.
  3. Select Preferences from the Image Capture menu in the toolbar.
  4. Select your default import program from the 'When a camera is connected, launch:' drop-down box.
  5. Once you've made your selection, just close the Image Capture application.
