Choose an upload size

When you upload photos to the web, you can choose a size to suit the various ways you use your online photographs. 'Size' can mean both the dimensions of the image (the height and width of the image measured in pixels) and the amount of space the file takes up on a drive ('file size'). The size options below refer to the dimensions on the longest side of the image.

If you've signed up for Google+
  • Best for web sharing: Photos larger than 2048 pixels by 2048 pixels, will be automatically resized to 2048 pixels (on their longest edge). You get unlimited free photo uploads at this size.
  • Original Size: Uploads the image at the original image resolution (e.g. 4288 x 2848). If you choose to upload images at their original size, they'll count toward your free storage limits.
If you haven't signed up for Google+
  • Original Size: Uploads the image at the original image resolution (e.g. 4288 x 2848).
  • 1600 pixels: Recommended, great for prints, sharing online albums, or for use as a screensaver.
  • 1024 pixels: Good for sharing online albums with friends and family.
  • 800 pixels: Uploads up to 800 pixels are free for all users of Picasa Web Albums. A good size for publishing images on blogs and webpages.

Choosing your upload size affects the quality of the image you store online. Smaller upload sizes come at the cost of reduced image quality - especially important as the size at which you upload is the largest size at which your photo can be downloaded. Picasa gives you the option to preserve original image quality for smaller size uploads to Picasa Web Albums as well. This means that when Picasa creates and uploads a smaller sized JPEG, it uses the quality settings of the original image to maximize image quality at the smaller resolution. Uploading images at sizes larger than 800 pixels count toward your free storage limits.

To preserve the original image quality when you upload at a smaller size than the original photo:

  1. Click Tools > Options (Windows) or Picasa > Preferences (Mac).
  2. Click the Web Albums tab
  3. Check the box next to 'JPEG Quality: Preserve original image quality.' This option is automatically enabled when uploading at 'Original Size.'
