I've checked Google account security settings. My Android phone and MacBook Pro are the only devices connected to this account. I do not recognize anyone in the photos. I have never been to the location where the photos are taken. How can this happen? Is there something wrong with Google's systems/databases?

Hi Dan,

here are some of the possible reasons why you are seeing photos you may not recognize:
  • Your Google account shares storage with other products such as Blogger, Google Drive, Google+ or Hangouts. It is possible that you uploaded images to one of the other Google products which is now being displayed in Google Photos.
  • You accepted someone’s invite to share their photo library.
  • You uploaded someone’s files to your Google Drive storage.
  • You left your account signed in on another device.
  • You sold a device without resetting it to factory defaults.
  • You received the images via a messaging application such as Hangouts, WhatsApp, etc.
  • You configured the Google Backup & Sync software on a computer to upload the photos from a system folder such as the cache of a web browser.
  • You set up a third party service (e.g. IFTTT) to automatically upload photos to your account.
  • You have in your mobile device’s microSD slot a card you aren’t aware of or don’t remember inserting.
You should first https://security.google.com/settings/security/secureaccount review your account security, check for any unknown devices, and https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/41078 change your Google password, possibly https://www.google.com/landing/2step/ enabling 2-step verification. If you've looked into these explanations and still aren't sure why you're seeing these photos, please let us know.

This is happening to me. Well, not exactly, I don't get others photos, but a friend of mine is getting "rediscover this day" alerts with my photos. I have not shared those photos with him, and neither have I made him a collaborator.

Someone else's personal photos are displayed in my phone, I haven't clicked these photos nor I received it earlier , information on photos showed it was clicked on Samsung, Xiaomi ,etc phone models, which I never used, I check Google photos regularly and I had never seen these before . All of a sudden I found these images in my phone..

I am getting "rediscover this day" alerts on my google photos, from 2011 (years before I ever used a google photos account), from people I do not recognize. I do not recognize anyone in the photos, and I have never been to this location. I checked through the possible reasons listed above, and absolutely none of these  situations are applicable or happened. I am accessing someone's personal photos, and I am rightfully worried a stranger is accessing my photos as well. This is a severe breach of privacy.

I have been getting someone else's vacation and dog photos for about 2 years now. I don't really even like to look at my wife's dog pics let alone some stranger. Does this mean that they are seeing my photos as well and are they losing these pics when they show up in my account and vica versa? Should I be more careful as to what I am taking pictures of?

Just had this happen to me as well - looking through photos I see a photo of some random person's baggage as well as a dinner I definitely did not attend.

I'm having the same problem as Navya Chelluboyina. I can't check it for myself, since is not on my account where the photos of others are beeing displayed, but I've been warned by some close friends that some of my "Rediscover this day" photos are been shown on their accounts, without any of those photos/albums beeing shared with them ever. This is disturbing, and while it's been a while since any of my friends told me it happened again, but without official word, the fear of happening is still there.

I have this issue when I look at my photos on Google photos, half of them aren't my own. I've also had one of said pictures uploaded to my Instagram account which troubles me further. How can we ensure Google actually deals with this. I don't see a straight forward way of contacting them directly aside from posting on such a forum which it seems they never respond to..?
