Depth Effect Photos Not Backing Up to Google Photos 0 Recommended Answers 30 Replies 100 Upvotes

I have continuously tried to back up the photos from my iPhone to the Google Photos App. When I open Google Photos and sync my photos, there are about 100 depth effect photos that remain on my phone and not uploaded to Google Photos.

I have searched and they are not on Google Photos anywhere, and when I 'free up space' by deleting photos and videos off my phone that have been uploaded to Google Photos, they remain on my phone because they are not backed up.

Does anyone know why this is or how I can fix it? As you can imagine, it is very frustrating. I am wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that I am still running IOS 10.3.3 on my iPhone 7.

Any and all help is welcomed and appreciated.

Thanks,
Jake

When you say "Depth Effect" do you mean "Portrait"?
I have many Portrait photos from my iPhone that are backed up just fine to Google Photos. I can't think of any explanation why they wouldn't be. Have you tried manually backing them up? with 3-dot menu > Back up

Yes, when I refer to depth affect, I do mean portrait photos. My phone is not capable of taking them, but I do have them on my phone from people who have sent them to me.

I have not tried manually backing up. When I go to my 3 dot menu on Google Photos, there is not a backup option. Can you please elaborate on that?

Thanks!
Jake

To manually back up, you need to open a photo - or select multiple photos. Then tap the 3-dot menu and you should see Back up as an option. If not, that usually means they're already backed up.
Let me know if that helps

No, on my iPhone photo app, when I select a single photo – or multiple photos –  there is no option to "back up."

The photos that remain in my iPhone library or all portrait photos, as these are the ones that I am on able to back up to google photos and thus unable to "remove free The photos that remain in my iPhone library or all portrait photos, as these are the ones that I am unable to back up to Google photos and us unable to "remove free storage space" which would include them.

Ok, let's look at something else. Open one of those photos and look at the info to see the file size. They must be larger than 256X256. To see info, tap the 3-dot menu then Info. Lastly, this is on an iPhone right? If Android, check device folders.

Re-reading this thread - I have another idea. When you look at info, what is the date showing? Maybe they are backed up and you just need to find that date.  ooops - no, that can't be it because you say they are skipped with Free up space. If their size is OK, I'm out of suggestions.

Chris,

Thank you for your continuous attempts to help me. Unfortunately, I am unsure if I am being unclear, I don't know that you understand my problem completely.

I can not select the "three dot menu" and then push "info" because these portrait photos have not been uploaded to Google Photos. They are on the Photos app of my iPhone 7 running IOS 10.3.3.

When I backup my photos to Google Photos, these photos are left on my phone. They are not removed when I 'free up space' because they are not been backed up to Google Photos.

Also, I am unable to see the size of the photos from the Apple Photos app.

I hope this better allows you to understand my problem .

I can relate to your requirement.
If I may correctly put it, the depth of field editor is currently missing in photos app.
This feature used to enable user to edit pictures with depth effect like changing the object of focus and amount of blur.

Chris - (above) is not getting the point.

I am missing this feature too. Please do update if you get answers.
If I get any inputs, i will share it with you

Same here.... Google Photos on IPhone X does not backup "SOME" Portrait photos , but do backup some others.

For those that are backed up, you lose the possibility of changing the f (depth of field) of it in , but I assume that's because Google does that to save space.

I have hundreds of portrait photos, along with a lot of videos and panoramic photos that never backed up, therefore "Free up space" does not delete them from the local IPhone storage.

I did some test like opening the photo, copying to a new one, then closing it, and Google Photos then does backup BOTH versions. Seems like a big bug to me.
