As we may all know Google photos will not sync to DRIVE (google drive) anymore. google say this is to stop the confusion, but i am no confused. whenever u take a photo with ur phone it uploads to google PHOTOS. and then will also create a copy in your Google DRIVE(i doubt google uses double the storage as if u delete a photo from google photos in drive also deleted. but there is a feature where u auto download a copy from google DRIVE to your HARD DRIVE. dont' get confused there.

it was a perfect feature, as 99% of the website/email when u need to upload a photo, it can only select a file from your LOCAL HARD DRIVE, and not cloud storage.as since google don't make a copy on ur local disk anymore, its soo bloody annoying to download the photos i want into a zip file and unzip it. are we back to the 90's ??

im happy that my photos/files are safe with Google but is bloody annoying when need to do anything from my Laptop as PC features do not support select photos from Google Photos directly, it must be on ur local HARD DRIVE!  is there anyway to get around it... or should i start using Microsoft OneDrive from now ??

You should not skip Google Photos, but really start with OneDrive indeed, but for syncing to PC only.
So install the OneDrive on phone and set it up for camera-upload only (when having wifi).
Then these photos are synced to the Camera-album in the OneDrive-section in your Windows Explorer and they should be moved weekly to your backupfolder to prevent cluttering in the OneDrive cloud which only is needed for temporary storage (generally far below 5 GB).

That's all and much more safe then the buggy and confusing (for many) and dangerous subway via Google Drive.

PS: switch-off the syncing from the dead GP-folder to your pc (that folder can stay - it takes no storage).

I have the exact same problem!
It used to work perfectly and all my Google Pixel 3 pictures were copied to my local PC HDD, now I need to manually download them as a zip and copy them to my Pictures folder...
I contacted Google Support and are awaiting feedback, that they provide an acceptable solution to this.
Why fix something that ain't broke?
I have unlimited Google Photos storage for my Google Pixel 3, I want to use it
