Delete photos and videos

You can delete up to 500 photos and videos from your Google Photos library or in your SD card at a time.

Before you delete photos and videos

Know where photos do and don't get removed. 

Photos and videos you delete are also removed from:

Photos and videos you delete are not automatically removed from:

  • Blogger
  • YouTube
  • Gmail
  • Google+

Get more time to recover deleted photos and videos

If you want time to recover deleted photos and videos, turn on back up & sync. Deleted items will stay in the trash for 60 days before they're permanently deleted.

Delete photos and videos

If your photo or video has already been backed up and you deleted it, it will remain in your Trash for 60 days.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account. 
  3. At the bottom left, tap Photos.
  4. Touch and hold a photo or video you want to move to trash. You can also select multiple photos or videos.
  5. At the top right, tap Trash Trash and then Delete.
  6. Tap to confirm you want to delete the photo(s). 

You can also free up space on your phone and keep your photos in your Google Photos library.

Restore photos & videos

If you want to get a deleted item back, check your trash to see if you can get it back. If your photo or video has already been backed up and you deleted it, it will remain in your Trash for 60 days.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. At the top left, tap Menu Menu, then Trash Trash.
  3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
  4. At the top right, tap Restore Restore. That photo or video will be restored to your Google Photos library and added back into any albums it was in.

If you want to see the photo or video back in the iPhone or iPad Photos app, go to your iPhone or iPad's Photos app's Recently Deleted album to restore it.

Don't see the photo or video?

If something isn't in your trash, it can't be restored. You won't be able to restore a photo if:

  • You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.
  • You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash.
  • You permanently deleted it from your trash.
  • You permanently deleted it from your device’s Gallery app, without being backed up.
