Edit photos

Add filters, crop photos, and more on your mobile device or computer.

Tip: If you have back up & sync turned on, your edits will sync to your Google Photos library.

Before you get started

Download and install the Google Photos app.

Adjust, crop, or rotate a photo

  1. On your Android device, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Open the photo you want to edit.
  3. Tap Edit Edit.
    • To add or adjust a filter, tap Photo filters Photo filters. Tap to apply a filter, tap again to adjust. 
    • To manually change lighting, color, or add effects, tap Edit Edit. For more options, tap the Down arrow Down Arrow
    • To crop or rotate, tap Crop & rotate Crop & rotate. To crop the photo, tap and drag the edges. 
    Tip: While you edit, touch and hold the photo to compare your edits to the original.
  4. At the top right, tap Save.

Your edits will be applied to the photo, but you can undo them at any time. 

If your photos are not backed up, edits will be saved as a separate photo.

Save new shots from your motion photos 

When you take a motion photo of a friend or a group, Google Photos will sometimes recommend another shot from your motion photo. You can also pick your favorite shot.

Note: This feature is currently only available on Pixel 3.

  1. On your Pixel 3, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Open a motion photo. 
  3. Swipe up on the photo. 
  4. Tap Shots in this photo
  5. Scroll through the shots in your picture and pick your favorite. 
    • Recommended shots will have a white dot over them. 
    •  The original photo will have a gray dot over it. 
  6. To save a new photo, tap Save copy

Shots you save appear in your Google Photos library next to the original photo. 

Change date & time stamps

To change a photo or video's date and time stamps, open photos.google.com, and tap Computer above to follow the steps. 

You can change the date and time stamps for photos and videos using a computer. When you change the date and time of your photo, the edited date and time will appear in Google Photos. But if you share it to other apps or download it, it may show the original date and time saved by your camera. 

Undo edits

  1. On your Android device, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Open the photo with edits you want to remove.
  3. Tap Edit Edit and thenMore More and then Undo edits. 
  4. When you're done, tap Save.
