Set up a backup payment method

For some Google products, you can set up a backup payment method that’ll be used if the primary method fails for any reason (such as an expired credit card or insufficient funds). Backup payment methods can be especially useful for ongoing subscriptions to help avoid interruptions in service.

Before you start

Before you set up a backup payment method, note the following:

  • Not all payment methods can be used as a backup payment method.
  • When certain payment methods are set as the primary payment method, you can’t set a backup payment method.
  • Bank accounts can’t be used as an automatic payment method.
  • Digital banks aren’t supported to get payouts.

Bank account requirements

Countries with wire transfer

  • Bank accounts need to be able to get payouts with wire transfer.
  • Bank accounts need to be opened from the same country where the merchant account is registered.
  • Bank accounts need to be in USD.
    • Merchants from India need to have an account in INR and can get funds in USD.

Countries with electronic funds transfer

  • Bank accounts need to be able to get payouts with electronic funds transfer (EFT).
  • Bank accounts need to be opened from the same country where the merchant account is registered.
  • Bank accounts need to be in the merchant’s local currency.

Set up a backup payment method

  1. Sign in to the payments profile.
  2. Click Subscriptions services.
  3. Choose which subscription, service, or product you’d like to set a backup payment method for, then click Manage.
  4. Depending on the product you selected, you’ll see one of the following:
    • If you see "Change payment method," follow the steps below:
      1. Click Change payment method.
      2. Click Update backup payment method.
      3. Select your desired backup payment method.
    • If you see "Manage payment method," follow the steps below:
      1. Click Manage payment methods.
      2. Your available payment methods appear as cards. Decide which payment method you’d like to set as your backup, or add a new payment method.
      3. Select Backup from the menu on your chosen payment method’s card.

Tip: For countries that use EFT for fund transfer, before you get the payout, your bank account needs to be verified. Learn more about bank account verification.
