token

A “virtual account number,” a token is a number representing a cardholder’s card that is assigned to a specific device or app (in this case, Google Pay). Tokens help ensure account security because they differ from the card numbers they represent. Cardholders do not know their token numbers because they operate entirely “behind-the-scenes.”
