You can use Google Pay to send money to friends and family in India using your mobile device. You’ll need an internet connection, an Indian bank account and an Indian phone number.
You can find people to send money to if they’re nearby or you can search for them by their:
- Name
- Phone number
- UPI ID (typically friendname@bankname)
- Bank Account and IFSC code
Send money to someone nearby
You can send money to someone near you who uses Google Pay.
Note: Google Pay uses audio pairing to help you connect with nearby users. You’ll need to let Google Pay use your microphone.
- Make sure the person you want to send money has Google Pay installed on their phone.
- Open Google Pay
on both phones.
- In the top right, tap your profile.
- Tap on your profile again, and tap your Spot Code.
- Get people to scan the code with their Google Pay scanner.
- Enter the amount and description and select the form of payment.
- Tap Proceed to pay.
- Enter your UPI PIN.
When the money has been sent, you will get a notification.
Send money to someone anywhere in India
To pay one of your contacts, no matter where in India they are:
- Open Google Pay
.
- From the bottom of the screen, tap "New Payment"
- Search for the person or contact you want to send money.
- Once you select the person/contact are provided, in next screen, enter the amount.
- Make sure you enter the correct details. Once you send the money, the transaction can’t be cancelled.
- Tap Pay.
- Enter the amount and description and select the form of payment.
- Tap Proceed to pay.
- Enter your UPI PIN.
When the money has been sent, you’ll get a notification. You'll also receive an SMS from your bank with the debited amount.
Note: If your transaction to your contact’s bank account fails, the bank might debit the money from your bank account and then refund it. In this case, you will receive two SMSes, one for the debit and the second for the refund.
Send money to external bank account
To pay one of your contacts, no matter where in India they are:
- Open Google Pay
.
- Tap “New payment” in the screen, it will take you to payment options where you need to tap Bank transfer option.
- Once you chose bank transfer, the screen will ask for following details.
- Recipient Name
- Recipient account number and re-enter once again.
- IFSC code
- Once above inputs are provided, in next screen, enter the amount.
- Tap Pay.
- Enter the amount and description and select the form of payment.
- Tap Proceed to pay.
- Enter your UPI PIN.
When the money has been sent, you’ll get a notification. You'll also receive an SMS from your bank with the debited amount.

Common reasons why you can’t find someone
In Google Pay, the “Allow people to find you” setting isn’t automatically turned on.
If this setting isn’t turned on, a person isn’t searchable unless you’re already connected to them on Google Pay.
To turn on the “Allow people to find You” setting, the receiver must complete the following steps.
- Open the Google Pay app

- On the Pay screen
, at the top right, tap your profile picture or Account

- Select Allow people to find you.
You can search for someone in your contacts with their name, phone number, or email:
- If a person is in your device contacts, you can search for them with their name.
- If a person isn’t in your device contacts, you can search for them with their email address or phone number.
