Biometric authentication enables you to make UPI payments with your fingerprint or face ID so that you don't need to enter your PIN each time.
Important: You can send up to ₹5000 with biometric authentication. To send a higher amount than ₹5000, you must use the PIN-based authentication.
This feature is available for:
- Devices with built-in biometric security.
- Bank accounts or RuPay cards that are enabled for biometric payments.
Set up biometric authentication for your bank account
You need to enable biometric authentication for the bank account that you want to use to make payments.
- Open the Google Pay app

- At the top right, tap your profile photo
Set up payment methods
- Select a bank account or RuPay credit card for biometric authentication.
- Tap Manage biometrics.
- On the bank account screen, turn on Use fingerprint or face ID.
- To allow your bank to use biometrics, tap Accept and set up.
- Enter your UPI PIN.
- To verify your biometrics, follow the instructions on the screen.
- Once UPI PIN and biometric details are verified, biometric authentication is activated for that bank account.
- You're redirected to the 'Manage biometrics' screen, which shows that the toggle is on.

Important: You have three attempts to verify your UPI PIN and biometrics. After three unsuccessful attempts, you'll be redirected to the 'Bank account' screen to retry the biometric activation.
Make payments with biometric authentication
- Open the Google Pay app
- Scan the QR code or enter the receiver's VPA, UPI ID or phone number.
- Select the receiver.
- Tap Pay.
- Enter the amount.
- Select the biometric-enabled bank account.
- Tap Pay ₹{amount}.
- To complete payment, use your fingerprint or face ID to verify your identity.
Deactivate biometric authentication
Important: If you deactivate your biometric authentication, you need to restart the setup and verification process to re-enable it.
- Open the Google Pay app
- At the top right of the home screen, tap your profile photo
- Select the biometric authentication-enabled bank account.
- Turn off Use biometrics.
- To deactivate, tap Yes, disable.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a maximum amount that can be paid using biometric authentication?You can only send up to ₹5,000 with biometric authentication. To send more than ₹5000, you must use the UPI PIN-based authentication.
This indicates that you've exhausted the maximum verification attempts allowed. For your security, biometric setup is limited to three verification attempts with a fingerprint or face ID. If you fail all three times, you're redirected to the 'Bank account' screen to start over.
Tip: For fingerprint authentication, use the same finger that you use to unlock your device. Make sure that it's registered in your device settings.
If you receive this error while you set up biometric authentication and face ID fails, switch to fingerprint authentication.
The error occurs when you try to set it up for a bank that doesn't support biometric authentication. This feature is available only with a few banks at the moment.
It could be because you've exhausted the maximum number of attempts. If your fingerprint or face ID verification fails after three attempts, you have to use your UPI PIN to make the payment.
If you choose to modify, add or delete your device's biometric credentials or change your phone, the Google Pay biometric setup will be removed. You'll have to set it up again.

This error means that your current UPI ID isn't eligible for biometric authentication. You need to add more UPI IDs.
