Get started with “Ask GPay”

Important: "Ask GPay" is currently available to a limited number of users in India and may not be available on your app yet.

"Ask GPay" is an AI assistant in Google Pay that analyses your spending patterns and helps you with information related to managing your money better. You can chat with it to:

  • Understand your spend patterns.
  • Get tips on how to save better.
  • Explore offers, such as help you find the right credit card for your travel expenses.
  • Learn about finance, such as SIP or CIBIL score.

Important:

  • Ask GPay is powered by AI, and like all AI, it can make errors.
  • Ask GPay provides financial information and insights for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional financial advice. It is not a registered financial advisor.
  • Don’t share highly sensitive personal information, such as passwords, PINs or full account numbers, with Ask GPay.
  • Ask GPay cannot initiate or complete payment transactions on your behalf.

What you need

Ask GPay uses your transaction history and CIBIL report data with Google Pay to provide suggestions that are tailored to you. Please note, "Personalization within Google Pay" feature is required for the "Ask Gpay" experience. The Personalization control is off by default. Users are given the option to turn it on during onboarding.

To turn it on please follow these steps. Please note, you can choose to turn it on and off anytime.

Enable personalisation within Google Pay app

  1. Open the Google Pay app .
  2. At the bottom right corner, click You and then Settings and thenPrivacy & Securityand thenData and personalisation.
  3. Turn Personalisation within Google Pay on .

Access Ask GPay

  1. Open the Google Pay app .
  2. At the bottom of the home screen, tap Money.
  3. To start a chat with Ask GPay, under "Ask About your finances", tap Ask a question.

    Tip: You can also directly click a suggested prompt chip to start a conversation.

Chat with Ask GPay

In Ask GPay, you can:

  • Ask any question with text and get AI-powered responses.
  • Ask follow-up questions on a topic.
  • Analyse your data better and get access to information to make your independent decisions, such as:
    • "Analyse my spends from last week."
    • "What is the best card for my spends?"

Use text to ask a question:

  1. Enter your question in the Ask GPay screen.
  2. To ask a follow-up or a new question, type in the "Ask me anything" bar at the bottom of the screen.

View chat history

You can access your chat history from the past 42 days to review your previous discussions with Ask Gpay.

  • Open the Google Pay app .
  • At the bottom of the home screen, tap Money.
  • On the top right corner of Ask GPay screen, tap .
  • Select the topic to view your chat history.

Your feedback helps us improve Ask GPay. At the bottom of each Ask GPay response, you'll find thumbs up and thumbs down .

  • If you found the response helpful, tap .
  • If you found the response unhelpful, inaccurate, confusing, or otherwise problematic, tap .
  • To provide detailed feedback, tap Get started, answer the questions and tap to submit your feedback.

How is your data used by Ask GPay

When you use Ask GPay, your queries, generated answers, best matches, and associated financial data are processed by Google’s AI. Your data remains within the Google Pay ecosystem and is never shared with third-party applications. To protect your privacy, we do not utilize your data for the purpose of training Google’s AI models. We handle all information strictly in accordance with the Google Pay Terms of Services and Google Privacy Policy. To continuously enhance your experience, AI interactions, and feedback may be used for product improvements within Google Pay; where this occurs, we implement rigorous privacy-preserving controls and anonymisation techniques to protect your identity.

Ask GPay may use the following data to tailor the response to you, if you have turned on personalization, which can be viewed and adjusted in your privacy settings in the Google Pay app:

  • Your past Google Pay transactions and associated data
  • Your saved payment methods in Google Pay
  • Your Google account information, if consented
  • Your CIBIL report, if shared and consented

Ask GPay is designed to never store, access or process highly sensitive identifiers, which include your full credit or debit card numbers, complete bank account numbers, or government-issued financial IDs. These details are strictly excluded from all AI interactions. Learn more about it.

Human reviewers (including trained reviewers from our service providers) review some of the data we collect for quality evaluations. Users’ personal data and sensitive information is redacted before sending to the human reviewers.

Common questions

Why doesn't Ask GPay give me specific investment advice or tell me what to invest in?

Ask GPay is an informational tool and not an investment advisor. It can’t predict market movements or provide specific investment recommendations. It can, however, provide general information about financial products, which is educational in nature. For example, it can answer questions like, "What is an Index Fund?"

How do I manage "Personalization within Google Pay" to use Ask GPay services?

To use Ask GPay, the "Personalization within Google Pay" setting in the app will need to be on.

The "Personalization within Google Pay" control is turned OFF by default. This means Google Pay does not use your activity data for personalization unless you explicitly turn this setting ON. Are you using this data to train your AI models?

No. Your data remains within the Google Pay ecosystem and is never shared with third-party applications. We handle all information strictly in accordance with the Google Pay Terms of Services and Google Privacy Policy. To protect your privacy, we do not utilize your data for the purpose of training Google’s AI models.

Why am I not able to see this feature in my app?

Ask GPay is currently rolling out to a limited number of users in India and may not be available on your account yet. We are working on expanding the feature to all users. Check your "Money" tab for the latest updates.

How can I ask for inaccurate data in Ask GPay’s responses to be corrected?

Ask GPay primarily utilizes the information already accessible within your Google Pay account. Since this feature is powered by AI, it may occasionally produce errors. If you find the response to be inaccurate, please let us know by sharing your feedback through the thumbs up or thumbs down icons provided at the conclusion of every conversation.

What applications have access to my chats?

Your financial data and interactions are not stored outside of Google Pay India, shared with the third-party apps, or used for model training purposes. We handle all information strictly in accordance with the Google Pay Terms of Services and Google Privacy Policy.

How long are my chats retained or Can I set up my chat history to auto-destruct after my conversation is done?

By default, your chat history is retained for 42 days, after which it is automatically deleted.

Why can’t I save and export messages from Ask Gpay?

To protect your privacy and ensure data safety, as your conversations may contain sensitive personal information, Ask GPay does not currently support the sharing or exporting of messages.

Can I selectively remove some of my past chats so they are not used to personalise my experience?

No. Chat history is currently not utilized to personalize your experience within the app.

What happens to my past chats if I change phones?

Your chat history is linked to the Google account used to sign in to the Google Pay app. Therefore, switching your mobile device will not impact your history; your past conversations will remain accessible in Ask GPay. You can view them at any time by tapping the history icon at the top right of the screen.

What happens to my past chats if I change my phone number?

What happens to my past chats if I change my email?

Your chat history and activities are linked to your Google account; therefore, you must sign in with the same email address to access your past Ask GPay conversations.

Is my data being used to show Ads to me?

Your data remains within the Google Pay ecosystem and is never shared with third-party applications. We handle all information strictly in accordance with the Google Pay Terms of Services and Google Privacy Policy. While you may encounter advertisements relevant to your interests, these are not linked to your Ask GPay conversations.

Is my "Ask GPay" data stored in India?

Yes, payment data is stored in India, in compliance with the Data Localization guidelines of RBI.
