Important: Currently, the UPI Tap & Pay feature is available only for Android users.
With the new Tap & Pay on UPI feature in Google Pay, you can tap your phone to initiate payments to merchants.
What’s new
Along with current UPI payment modes like Scan & Pay, Pay to Contact or UPI Number, Google Pay has launched the Tap & Pay on UPI feature. This feature is a new method to make contactless payments with UPI. It’s convenient as it only involves a simple tap to start the payment.
Who can use Tap & Pay on UPI
- Users with NFC-enabled Android devices
- Users with active forms of UPI payments in their Google Pay account
Tip: If you haven't added a payment method like credit card or bank account, install the app and add your bank account or any other suitable UPI payment method.
Where you can use Tap & Pay on UPI
You can tap and pay your UPI transactions to merchants who have:
- UPI NFC tag
- QR code sticker with UPI NFC tag
- Smart Soundpod with UPI NFC tag
Tip: To know whether a merchant’s device accepts tap transactions on UPI, check for the Tap & Pay symbol located in the middle of the QR code .
Get started with Tap & Pay on UPI
Important: When you tap and pay through UPI, if you've sufficient UPI Lite balance then it will be used for transactions below ₹500. If UPI Lite can't be used, then you can select other UPI payment methods.
- Ensure NFC is turned on.
- Make sure you have an active UPI payment method. Supported methods include: Bank account, UPI Lite, Rupay credit card, Credit line.
- If you plan to use UPI Lite, ensure you have sufficient balance.
- On your mobile device, open the Google Pay app

- On your home screen, tap Tap & Pay
.
- Ensure you are on the "UPI" tab.
- Enter the amount to be paid.
- Tap Next

- Tap your phone on the receiver’s NFC-enabled device.
- Select the payment method you want to use.
- Tap Pay [amount].
- To complete the transaction:
- If the amount is greater than ₹500 or if you don’t have a UPI Lite account, enter your UPI PIN.
- After a successful transaction, you can either tap
Share screenshot or Close.
Tip: For a smooth transaction, ensure that your payment method has sufficient balance and ready for payments.
Pay faster with UPI Lite
Set up UPI Lite so you can tap and pay PIN-free for payments less than or equal to ₹500.
- On your mobile device, open the Google Pay app

- On your home screen, tap Tap & Pay
.
- Ensure you are on the "UPI" tab.
- Enter the amount to be paid.
- Tap Next

- Tap your phone on the receiver’s NFC-enabled device.
- For payments less than or equal to ₹500 INR, UPI Lite account is automatically selected.
- Tap Pay [amount].
- After a successful transaction, you can either tap
Share screenshot or Close.
You will not be able to use your UPI Lite account for UPI Tap & Pay payments if:
- You haven’t enabled your UPI Lite account
- The transaction is more than ₹500
- Your UPI Lite account has insufficient balance
Tips:
- Tap & Pay (offline) is available only for UPI Lite users who have activated offline payments.
- To transact offline on UPI, in the balance screen, click on Activate offline payments.

How to turn NFC onBefore a transaction, if your NFC isn’t turned on yet, you’re asked to turn it on.
- On the pop-up screen, tap Turn on NFC.
- On the NFC home screen, turn on Use NFC.
- Go back to the Google Pay app.
- Enter the payment amount.
To make Tap & Pay transactions on UPI, you must use NFC-enabled Android phones. If your Android phone doesn’t have an NFC feature, continue with other payment modes such as Scan & Pay.
UPI Lite: For payments below ₹500, you will not need to enter UPI PIN.
Other UPI payment methods: You will be asked to enter your UPI PIN for all payment methods, as with any other UPI payment flow.
