Create a UPI Number on Google Pay

UPI Number

A UPI Number is a bank-verified phone number identifier of your UPI ID. It allows you to receive money from users, regardless of the app the user is on. You can create up to 3 UPI numbers for a UPI ID. This can be your phone number, or any 8–10 digit numeric ID you choose.

This is an extension of the Google Pay through phone number option that you find on your UPI app. This will allow anyone to send money from any UPI app.

Tip: By May 2022, you can't receive payments through your phone number unless you set your phone number as a UPI Number. But, you can continue to receive payments through your UPI ID or chathead.

Create a UPI Number

1. At the top right, click your profile picture.
2. Under "Payment Methods," select the bank account for which you want to create a UPI Number.
3. Go to the “Manage UPI Numbers” section.
4. Follow the on-screen steps.

Delete a UPI Number

1. At the top right, click your profile picture.
2. Under "Payment Methods," select the bank account.
3. Go to the “Manage UPI Numbers” section.
4. On the UPI Number you want to delete, click on the three dots.
5. Select Delete UPI Number.

Tip: When you create a numeric ID as your UPI number, remember that:

• Your UPI number can't be all the same digits (for example, all zeroes).
• You can't use the same 3 digits at the end of your UPI number (for example, it ends with 555).
• Your UPI number can’t be in serial ascending or descending order (for example, 123456).

FAQ

I tried to delete my UPI Number, but there’s an error

On your Google Pay account, check for any pending actions. For example, if you have any pending mandates, you’ll need to take action on them before you delete your UPI Number.

I chose account XX as my primary bank, but money went to YY

If you receive payments through a UPI number or UPI ID, the money goes into the bank account associated with that UPI ID or number.

However, if both the sender and recipient are on Google Pay, the transferred funds are received in the bank account associated with the default bank account on Google Pay.

I tried to create a UPI Number, but the status isn’t updated

You can continue to receive phone number payments from the Google Pay app. We’ll notify you when the status is updated. To check the status, go to the payment method settings.

Use a UPI ID to transfer money for the current transaction and try again later.

I can’t send money to my contact whom I sent money before

If you made a payment through a phone number the last time, there’s a chance the recipient may not have a UPI Number or may not be on Google Pay.

To send money, you can:

• Pay them with their UPI ID.
• Invite them to create a UPI Number.
• Transact with the user by opening the previous chathead you have with them.

The UPI number creation is still pending

Your UPI number is created based on the readiness of the payment service provider you're using. You'll receive a notification when your UPI number is created. To check the status of the creation, you can check under the "Manage UPI IDs" section.

I received multiple notifications to create a UPI number

You might continue to find notifications to create a UPI number on multiple surfaces in the app. This is because usage of a UPI number becomes critical once the phone number payments stop in May 2022.

I couldn't pay to a UPI number registered phone number

The payment service provider used by the recipient might not be ready with the UPI number feature. Try to make the payment through your recipient’s UPI ID instead.
