Pay contactless with your phone

You can use your phone to pay for goods or services with Google Wallet.

Where you can use Google Wallet

Important:

Near Field Communication (NFC) must be turned on to make contactless payments. To turn on NFC, check your phone's settings app.
You must have a payment method in a supported country.

You can pay with Google Wallet wherever you find the contactless or Google Pay symbols. They're located on the payment terminal screen or cash register at checkout.

You can buy items with your phone or pay for public transport on trains and buses on contactless terminals with either of these logos:

Set up pay contactless

Open the Google Wallet app .
At the top right, tap your profile picture or account Payment setup.
To make contactless payments, be sure to meet these requirements:
- Turn on NFC on your phone.
- Set Google Pay as your default payment app.
- Add a contactless payment method. You must have a payment method in a supported country.
  1. Check the message above your card. If there's no message, your card is ready to pay contactless. Some common messages include:
  2. Card not set up : To make contactless payments, above your card, tap Finish setup. Follow the on-screen instructions and verify your payment method.
  3. Turn on NFC to pay with Wallet : Your phone either doesn't support NFC or has it turned off. To make contactless payments, you must turn on the NFC.
  4. Card suspended : There's an issue with your card. To fix it, contact your bank.
- Set up a screen lock.
- Your phone must meet the security requirements.

If all these requirements are met, your phone is ready to make contactless payments.

Pay in a shop

Step 1: Tap to pay contactless

Important:

You must have Google Wallet as your phone's default NFC wallet app. Learn how to set Google Wallet as your default payment app.
When you pay contactless, Google Wallet will use your default selected card. Learn how to change your default card.

You have two ways to pay contactless in a shop:

Unlock your phone and hold it near the reader:
- You can tap the terminal when your phone is unlocked, even when the Google Wallet app is not open.
- If prompted, use your Android screen lock to verify the payment. Learn how to verify that it's you to make a purchase.
Open Google Wallet app using a shortcut and hold it near the reader:
- Some phones offer shortcuts to the Wallet app, like Quick Settings or the lock screen. Learn how to open Google Wallet.
- For Pixel 8 phones or newer, set up a shortcut that works when you double-press the power button. Learn how to open Google Wallet with the power button.

Step 2: If the payment is successful, a blue tick will appear on the screen.

Try to hold your phone in a different way. Your NFC antenna could be near the top or bottom of your device.
Hold your phone closer to the payment reader.
Hold your phone to the payment reader for a few extra seconds.

The cashier says that your payment was declined

Double-check if the shop accepts mobile payments.
Contact your bank. There may be an issue with your card and your bank may have declined the transaction. If the transaction is declined, you aren't charged.

Return something that you bought in a shop

Bring your receipt and item to the shop.
If asked to swipe your card, hold the back of your phone to the contactless payment terminal.

For some returns, you might have to provide the last four digits of your virtual card. Learn more about virtual cards.

Open the Google Wallet app .
At the top, tap the card that you used for the purchase. You may have to swipe from right to left.
At the top, tap More .
The last four digits of the virtual card are displayed.

The retailer should tell you when to expect your refund.
