Set or change a default payment method

The first payment method you add to Google Pay becomes your default way to pay for all in-store purchases. When you pay with Google Pay in a store, it’s automatically charged.

Important: For users in Japan, you can set your default/primary cards each for QUCIPay, iD, and VISA Touch separately.

If you’re in the U.S., you can also set a default payment method for receiving money. Money sent to you will automatically transfer to your default payment method.

Important: You can only set a default payment method for receiving money after you’ve received money once using the Google Pay app.

Change your default payment method

For buying in stores
  1. Open the Google Pay app Google Pay.
  2. On the bottom, tap Payment.
  3. Tap the payment method you want to make your default.
  4. Turn on Default for in-store purchases.
For sending or receiving money
  1. Open the Google Pay app Google Pay.
  2. On the bottom, tap Payment.
  3. Tap the debit card or bank account you want to make your default card.
  4. Turn on Default for receiving money.

Pay another way

You can pay with other cards that aren’t your default card. To switch cards for future purchases, change your default card.

Pay with a different card in stores
  1. Open the Google Pay app Google Pay.
  2. At the top, on your card, swipe left until you find the card you want to use.
  3. Hold the back of your phone against the payment terminal.
  4. If prompted, choose "Credit," no matter your type of card.
  5. For debit card transactions, you might have to enter your PIN. Use the PIN you set up with your bank or service provider.

You can change to a different payment method while you’re sending money.

Receiving money

Once you set a default payment method, money you receive will automatically transfer to it. If you want to receive money to a different payment method, you’ll need to change your default.

Problems in stores

Default payment method is declined
  1. Contact your bank to make sure there isn’t a problem with your account.
  2. If your account isn’t the problem, contact the retailer for more info.
Accidental charge to another payment method

Contact the bank for the card you wanted to use. Check if there’s a problem with your account.

Can’t set store credit card as default

For a store (private label) credit card to be your default card, it needs to be the only card you add to Google Pay. To pay this way from time to time, follow the steps in "Pay another way"

Problems receiving money

If you get an email from Google Pay about a problem with your default payment method, the money won’t be automatically transferred to your bank or debit card account.

Follow the instructions below to fix the issue.

Step 1: Fix the problem
  • Outdated default payment method: Update the payment method, mark it as your default, and claim the money.
  • Reached debit card transaction limit: You won’t be able to transfer more than $2,500 per day to it. You can claim the money to a bank account instead.
  • Reached Google Pay balance limit: You may have reached the limit for your Google Pay balance, which is $25,000. To receive more funds, please withdraw from your balance to lower the amount. Alternatively, you can also switch your default payment method for receiving funds to a bank account or debit card.
  • Haven’t verified your identity: You might have reached the limit for the amount of money you can send or receive. Contact us to resolve the issue.
  • None of these is the issue: Contact us.
Step 2: Claim your money

Important: The money must be claimed within 14 days or money sent to you will be returned to the sender.

  1. Tap Menu Menu and then Activity, on the Google Pay app or visit Activity on the web.
  2. Next to the transaction, tap or click Claim.
  3. Follow the instructions to claim your money. If you fixed your default payment method, money someone sends you next time will automatically transfer to your default account.
