Manage an Outline server

Change the location of a server

Once set up, the Server location cannot be changed. In order to change the location of a server, you would need to delete the Outline server and create a new one.

Delete a server

For most cloud providers, it’s fairly easy to remove the specific virtual machine you are using and set up a new one in a new location.

If you are using DigitalOcean, you can delete your existing virtual machine by clicking on the gear button and selecting “Destroy Server.” Immediately afterwards, you will be offered the option to create a new virtual machine in a location of your choosing.

If you remove an Outline server, it will be permanently deleted and its access keys will no longer work. If you do not want people to have an interruption in their access through Outline, you will need to set up a new Outline server and share access to it before deleting your old.

Server software updates

Outline servers automatically update with the latest security improvements so that you are always running the latest Outline technology. The automated update process is enabled by using Watchtower , an open-source library that regularly checks and updates the docker image containing the Outline software.

Additionally, when you install Outline using the Outline Manager, we will set up a cron job to automatically update the host operating system (Ubuntu) and reboot when necessary. Note that this doesn’t happen on Advanced Mode in order to preserve the existing configuration, assuming the host is being used for other purposes.

Reset your server ID

The server ID is a randomly server-side generated ID that is created upon the creation of an Outline server. You can find it when opting into sharing anonymous metrics in the Settings interface.

The server ID is used in order to tie together anonymous usage statistics reported over time. If you want to reset the Server ID and obtain a new one, you need to replace your existing Outline server with a new one.

If you installed Outline using the DigitalOcean integration, you can simply reset your server by going to the Settings interface and selecting "Destroy Server". This action is irreversible and will erase all your credentials as well. Immediately following, you will be offered to create a new server, in a location of your choosing, and the server ID will be different.
