"Sticky" sessions with a redirect test?
1
I've created my first redirect test, which is currently redirecting 50% of traffic to a new version of a web site. I had assumed that if a user gets redirected then from then on (for a period of time at least) they would always be redirected whenever they go to the original URL. However, what's happening is each user gets redirected 50% of the time they visit the original URL. There's no "stickiness". They are just as likely to be redirected the second time they visit the original URL as they are the first time.

Is this the intended behaviour of a redirect test? Is there a way of configuring the experiment to enable sticky sessions?

It looks like Google Optimize redirect tests are "sticky" - when a user goes to the experiment URL, Google Optimize sets a cookie that indicates which variant the user will see. So long as they use the same browser and don't clear their cookies, they should always see the same variant.

One thing I found was that if a user frequently requests the experiment URL, they occasionally get the original site rather than a variant, even if they were initially redirected to a variant. I don't know why this happens, and it could be something specific to our webpage. This issue seems to go away if there are a few seconds between requests. I was using Google Puppeteer load testing to create some traffic, the requests were very frequent, and this issue kept happening, making me think that there were no sticky sessions. Once I made less frequent requests, the issue (largely) went away.

Thank you for this - that explains the behaviour I was seeing.

It would be great if this could be included in the main documentation. I can imagine others running into this behaviour while testing out their Google Optimize experiment, especially if they automate requests to their experiment URL using a script or a load testing tool.
