Nexus 6P muffled voice, call quality poor

While talking to my wife today she could barely hear me and said it sounded like I was very far away or muffled.  This was while I had the headset to my ear like normal.  If I put it on speaker, she said it would sound okay.  I tried to find others with this phone and a similar issue, but couldn't.  Please help!

Hello Jamie - Welcome to the Nexus Help Forum!

A good first step is to try and boot the phone into Safe Modedo the issues still show up? If not, then one of your 3rd party apps is causing the issue. Also I recommend you try Wiping the System Cache Partition.

Let me know your results or if you have questions.

Hi Jamie,

If it sounded good while on the handset (phone without headset) then I would say the headset may be the issue.

Now with that said, you did not provide much info, can you answer a few questions:

  • What type of headset, 3.5MM or Bluetooth?
  • Have you tried another headset?
  • I would also try Benjamin's suggestions.
Regards,
Marc

Benjamin and Marc,

Thanks for the replies!  I haven't had a chance to try the safe mode option yet but I did wipe the cache.  It didn't seem to work.  I should have said that when talking on the handset was when I had the problem (talking on the phone as normal), no bluetooth device issues, etc.

I saw on separate forums where other Android phones outside of the Nexus were having the same issue, so I'm guessing it probably is a 3rd party software issue.

If running in safe mode corrects the issue, what would be the recommended steps to follow to help resolve permanently?  Just uninstall apps until I find the problematic one?

Okay, I just tried safe mode and my wife said it was fine at first but then got muffled again.  She said it sounds like Charlie Brown's mom.  Putting it on speakerphone worked, but of course, call quality wasn't as good as when the handset was working like it should.  I talked via my car's bluetooth speaker today and it worked fine as well.  Caller never mentioned call quality was poor.

It seems to be intermittent, only working about 5-10% of the time when speaking on the handset normally.

Any suggestions from here?
