Nexus 5 (Android 6.0 Marshmallow OTA) - No Sounds

My Nexus 5 was working normally while previously running on Android 5.1 Lollipop. I got the 6.0 Marshmallow OTA update a few days ago. After installing, I noticed that my sounds (alarms, ringtones, and notifications) no longer worked anymore. I have tried both restarting the phone as well as a factory reset, but cannot get the sounds to start working again.

Update: Apps (such as Spotify or Youtube) play but do not emit sound.  However, I found that if I plug into an auxiliary cord, sound for those apps work. It still has no effect on general sounds (ringtone, alarms, or notifications).

Hi Dat,

Welcome to the Nexus Help Forum.

If you don't mind a suggestion, try restarting your Nexus 5 in safe mode, which temporarily disables any third-party apps to see if one of them is causing the problem. If the no sound problem ceases while running in safe mode, then it’s a good signal that a third-party app is the root of the problem. If this is the case, trying updating or uninstalling your most recent app(s) to see if this fixes the problem. To see your most recent apps, go to your Google play store account and My Apps.

Let me know if running safe mode is helpful or not.

Hi John,

Thanks for your suggestion. I tried running it in safe mode as advised, but once again was not able to get any sounds (ringtones, alarms, or messaging) working. I could not test sound on third party apps, because they were naturally disabled on safe mode. Do you have any other suggestions that might help resolve this issue?

I am having the same issue, where I just upgraded to Marshmallow 6.0 today and now I can't hear sound when making a call or trying to play YouTube. The only way I can get sound when making a call is to change to speaker phone. I rebooted in safe mode, and it does not fix the issue with audio while calling or when playing YouTube.

I have the same problem.

Same here. Vibrate and visual notifications all work. Connect via Bluetooth or auxiliary cable - all good. Zero ringtones, notifications, or audio in any any media.

I was using Android 5.1 on my Android. after the 6.0 update, no sounds except phone ringing. I fixed the problem by changing all app settings to not allowing drawing over other apps. Settings, apps, hit configure wheel, pick draw over other apps. This gives you all apps that allow this. Change each one to off. I might have changed all apps to draw=yes just before update to get File Manager to work.
