Record & play back audio with USB host mode

With USB host mode on your phone or tablet, you can record and play back audio, make telephone calls, and video conference using USB accessories like headsets, microphones, audio interfaces, and dongles.

Note: USB host mode doesn't work with a car's dock.

This feature works only on Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9, and Nexus 10 devices running Android 5.0 and up.

What you'll need to use USB host mode

  • OTG connector
Use a USB On the Go (OTG) connector to connect your audio accessory to your phone or tablet. Micro-USB doesn't support USB host mode by itself.
  • Supported audio accessory
Android host mode for audio works with most USB audio class-compliant ("driverless") accessories.
  • Power
Make sure that your USB audio accessory has power. You may need a powered USB hub to power your USB audio accessory, so that your battery doesn't lose charge as quickly.

How to use USB host mode for audio

  1. Plug the USB audio accessory into your Pixel phone or Nexus device with the OTG connector.
  2. Follow the accessory's instructions for use.
  3. Control the accessory's input and output through your Pixel phone or Nexus device.
