Set up your new Nexus device

Your new Nexus phone or tablet will walk you through the steps to set it up.

To make sure that your device doesn't lose power while setting up, we recommend keeping it plugged in until setup completes. Learn how to charge your device.

Important: Some of these steps only work on Android 6.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Set up your new Nexus device

The first time that you turn on your device, it will ask you to:

  1. Pick the language that you want your device to use.
  2. Connect to the Internet. Learn how to connect to a Wi-Fi network or mobile network.
  3. Sign in with your Google Account.

Copy your Google Account information to a new Nexus device

When you sign in to your Google Account on your Nexus phone or tablet, data associated with your account will sync.

Nexus using Android 8.1 & up

If you have your old phone

  1. On your new Nexus phone, tap Start. If you don't see "Start," open your Settings app and tap Finish setup.
  2. Under "Bring your data from," tap OK And then A backup from an Android phone.
  3. Connect both of your phones to a Wi-Fi network.
  4. On your old Android phone:
    1. Turn on Bluetooth.
    2. Open the Google app Google Search. Enter "Set up my device."
    3. When your new Nexus phone's name shows, tap it.
  5. Both phones will get a "Verify code" notification. Follow the on-screen steps.

If you can't use your old phone

  1. Check that you have a backup of your current Android phone. Learn how to manage backups.
  2. On your new Nexus phone, tap Start. If you don't see "Start," open your Settings app and tap Finish setup.
  3. Under "Bring your data from," tap OK And then A backup from the cloud.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps.

Nexus using Android 5.0 - 8.0

When you set up your phone, you can import Google Accounts, backed-up apps, and data from your current Android device to your new Nexus phone by using Tap & Go.

To use Tap & Go:

  • Your new Nexus phone must be using Android 5.0 and up.
  • Your current Android device must be using Android 4.0 and up and have NFC turned on.
  • Tap & Go isn't available for Nexus 9 or Nexus 10 tablets.

When the setup wizard asks you to use Tap & Go:

  1. Turn on and unlock your current device.
  2. On your current device, make sure that NFC is turned on. Learn how to turn on NFC.
  3. Place your current device and your new phone back to back until you hear a sound confirming the touch.
  4. When the screen on your current device says "Copy accounts and data from this device?," tap OK.
  5. The screen on your current device will lock. Use your PIN, pattern, or password to unlock it.
  6. When you get a notification that says "New device setup completed," tap that notification.
  7. If you have 2-Step Verification set up for your Google Account, or don’t have a screen lock set up on your new phone, you'll be asked to enter your account password.

When you're done, all your Google Account data and associated apps will be on your new device.
