Fix a screen that isn't working right

If your Pixel or Nexus device's screen isn't responding, or if you're seeing flickering, jumping, flashing, dead pixels, or a blank screen, try these quick fixes and troubleshooting steps.

After trying each recommended solution, check to see whether it fixed your issue.

Step 1: Check your device's screen

  1. Make sure that your screen isn't cracked, chipped, or damaged.
  2. If you have a case or screen protector, take it off.
  3. If you're wearing gloves, take them off.
  4. If you've put any stickers over the screen or sensors, peel them off.
  5. Make sure that your screen is clean.

Step 2: Try these troubleshooting steps

If none of the quick checks above worked, try the troubleshooting steps below.

Restart your device

To restart your phone or tablet:

  • Press your device's Power button. On the screen, tap Restart Restart.
  • If you don't see "Restart," press your device's Power button for about 30 seconds, until your device restarts.

After you restart, if your touchscreen is still completely unresponsive, learn how to reset your device to factory settings (below).

See whether an app is causing the problem

The problem may be caused by an app that you downloaded. To see whether a downloaded app is causing the problem, you can reboot your device in safe mode.

  1. Turn on safe mode. Learn how.
  2. Once you're in safe mode, touch the screen.
    • If your screen works in safe mode, a downloaded app is most likely causing your issue.
      1. To exit safe mode, restart your device.
      2. To find the app that’s causing issues, uninstall recently downloaded apps one by one.
      3. Once you remove the app that's causing the problem, you can reinstall the other apps that you removed.
    • If your screen doesn't work in safe mode, continue to the next section.
Test the affected part of your screen

If the issue happens only sometimes, or only on a specific part of the screen, you can use the notification shade to confirm. The notification shade is the panel that you can swipe down from the top of your screen.

  1. Touch the top left corner of the screen.
  2. Slowly drag your finger to the bottom right corner without lifting. Try to move your finger slowly enough that you can count to 10 before reaching the opposite corner of the screen.
    • If you can drag the notification shade all the way to the bottom of the screen
The problem isn't caused by a specific area on your screen. Learn how to reset your device to factory settings (below).
    • If the notification shade releases while you're still dragging your finger across the screen
Repeat the test. If the notification shade releases again, note whether it happened in the same place on the screen.
Turn off developer options

If you have developer options turned on, those developer settings could be affecting your touchscreen performance.

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap System and then Developer options. You'll see this only if you have developer options turned on.
  3. Turn off Developer options.

Still having screen issues?

If your screen still doesn't work correctly after trying all the common solutions above, you may want to try these advanced troubleshooting steps.

Consider resetting your device to factory settings

To remove any processes on your device that may be causing the issue, you can reset your device to factory settings.

IMPORTANT: A factory data reset will remove all data from your device. While any data stored in your Google Account will be restored, all apps and their associated data will be uninstalled. Before you perform a factory data reset, learn how to back up and restore data on a Pixel phone or Nexus device.

If an app that you downloaded caused the issue and you reinstall that app, the problem could come back.
